Loading a printer profile
« on: June 19, 2010, 12:42:58 pm »

I have been using the Epson papers for quite some time, therefore I haven't had to add printer profiles to my computer. I purchased a roll of Canson paper this week and need the corresponding Canson profiles. I download the proper ICC profile from their website. Their instructions for loading the profile (for a Mac), said to simply put the flie in "Library/colorSync/Profiles" I did this (see attachment -- profiles are circled in red).

Then launched Photoshop, but the profile doesn't show up in my print panel (see attachment). Suggestions?

When I go to "Soft Proof" in Photoshop, the Canson Profile shows up (see attachment). Why not in my print panel?

Those are not your profiles. You are looking at your media settings which you must also set.
I am in CS5. In the print dialog box on the rh side under color handling choose photoshop manages colors and your profiles box will be enabled.
You should have your entire list to choose from now.
That it shows in the proof box means its in the right place and available to choose for printing.
You have been printing without choosing the icc profile?

I just changed the Color Handling to "Photoshop Manages Colors." Then, I was able to choose the Canson ICC profile (see attachment).

Now when look at the media settings on my print panel, I see the same choices -- Watercolor Paper, Textured Fine Art paper, Velvet Fine Art Paper, Ultrasmooth Fine Art Paper and Canvas. Canson's website says that I should use the Premium Luster 260 as the media setting for their Platine Fiber Rag paper.

How do I know which media choice to use?

Now you are confusing me. You just answered your own question. "Canson says use Premium Luster 260" thats the one.
Now where to find it.
In CS5-Left Column in photoshop print dialog
print settings
layout
printer settings
media type
photo paper
Premium luster paper(260)

In CS4 you need another step.
From your print dialog box hit print at the bottom.
A new print box comes up and you now see Layout about half way down, just proceed from "layout" the way it is listed above.

Jan,

The media types you show (Watercolor Paper, Textured Fine Art paper, Velvet Fine Art Paper, Ultrasmooth Fine Art Paper and Canvas), are for Matte Black paper. If the Canson paper uses Luster as the media type you'll need to use Photo Black ink. Once you make that choice, the Luster media type will be available as a choice.

Jan,

What printer are you using?  According to Canson's website, Platine's media type is Semigloss both for Epson and Canon and Premium Satin for HP.  I'm curious as to where you found it listed as Premium Luster.

Rob,
Go to Cansons website
ICC profiles and paper presets
choose printer (I chose Epson 7900)
Under Plantine 310 go to far right column and click "read instructions"
Scroll to media settings
Premium Luster is shown

Randy,
I am on a Mac so this is how mine works.
If you click media types and then click on photo paper your selection for Premium Luster photo will show up.
When you set this media setting it automaticly chooses the proper photo black ink in the driver. It will also be greyed out so that you cannot change it.
Some of the media papers will give you the option to choose between pk and mk.
You then must set pk on the printer manually. (Speaking of my 7900) Others may vary.

Dan,

You're right. I can choose a PK paper (I wasn't looking at the print driver when I typed). My 3800 will switch to PK if I choose a PK media and hit print, or I can change it manually on the printer. I'm using Windows XP.

Randy,
My 3800 works the same way and will switch on its own, very nice.
On the bigger printers I have to do it manually, poor me.

I got the information from the Canson site (see attachment) ..... it says use Premium Luster.

As Randy said, that paper type will only show up after I change from Matte Black ink to Photo black. To do this, I need to swap out four ink cartridges that are low ..... and I'm out of one of them. It will arrive via FedEx tomorrow.

I am contemplating the purchase of a new Epson printer, to replace my Epson 7800. The 7800 works great, but only allows either matte black, or photo black ink (but not both at the same time). Since I have decided to use two papers (one for black and white, the other for color), I would be money ahead in the long run to do this.

My 7800 has had extremely low usage, and is like new. I paid $2999 for it and would like to sell it for $1,000. Have any of you sold used printers? Does this sound like a reasonable price?

All your questions were Canson/Premium Luster related. When you say you solved things you post a different media type?
I went right through the steps in my second post and works for me.
It may be possible you are seeing something different on your setup page with your 7880 vs. my 7900.
