« on: June 15, 2010, 06:38:43 am »

Hi everyone,
I´m thinking to buy this lens Mamiya  645 500mm f 5,6 manual to work with a Phase One and a P30+, my
doubt is, if the lens will give good results in digital or will be just spend money?
Thanks for your help and advises.

I think if you go back to some early Phase camera reviews in Luminous Landscape and if I remember correctly, the 500/5.6 was found to be a good performer on digital

I've used this lens and it's a real bargain for a very long lens. It needs to be stopped down to f/8 or f/11 (preferably 11) and shows some pretty heavy chromatic aberration but the sharpness and overall look is pretty good.

The real problem is (as always with such a long lens) getting sufficient shutter speed or dampening (tripod/monopod/double-tripod) to get the image sharp. At 32 megapixels and no AA filter that P30+ will show the lens-motion or shutter-slap of a 500mm lens very easily. So if you're the kind of shooter that wants to get the sharpest shot the system can produce then this is not a lens you will EVER hand-hold on a cloudy day. Even on a bright day you really need to have a monopod on the lens (as you would expect it has a lens bayonet) and employ careful technique and even then you'll probably find yourself at ISO200/ISO400 more often than not to give yourself breathing room.

Hello,
Thanks for your comments, I was testing the lens and it is has you say, without a tripod can not get an image focused on conditions, but when focus is flawless super sharp. Just don't now what to do :-)
