no, sorry. you can´t use pro6heads on the pro7a! the current in the pro7a is 1000V and the pro6 heads are only built for 900V. you can use pro7heads on older packs but not reverse.  got this info directly from the tech departement of profoto sweden.

thanks philipp.

so they have let you run the 7b packs as they have less power. (http://www.profoto-usa.com/products/pro-7/pro7b.asp).

how can i tell if a head is a pro-6 head or not??

i have an older head in the collection my gear that works with a pro-7a mains pack, but looks just like a pro-6 head as far as i can tell.

how can i tell what is what?

heres the head i have. i cant see anything on it that says its pro-7 or pro-6.

Hi Paul,

this is an "old" ProHead, probably sold in times of Pro-6. I always thought these heads would be fully compatible with Pro-7 (there has been the Pro-6 freeze, that used high tension as well). I tried to find some specific information, the german manual says you can use old Pro7 heads (not clearly speaking of old Pro head), Profoto does not supply a different flash tube for the old Pro head, it is the same tube like it is used in the current Pro heads. So I would assume you could at least savely use the old head after changing to a new tube. The manual for the Pro-8 (which is using high tension as well) says you can use all (also the old) Pro heads, there might be a slight modification of the fan circuit in 110V areas. That´s all wicked and does not lead to a clear conclusion. If you like I could talk to the german distributor / service station on monday. Definitly do not use older heads like Pro-5 or Pro-3 with the Pro-7 pack.

Cheers, Ulf

i don´t know how to tell them apart but i have a guess. I guess that the Pro7-heads (i have two that have Pro-7 head written on them) and the current Pro-Head have locking knobs, the older heads have locking levers like the one in your photo.

Hi Paul,

according to Profoto Germany you may use that head with Pro-7. I also checked this information with a repair station, same answer and regarding the use of this head with Pro-8, there is a tech note for a minor modification in 110V areas. No compatibility for older heads like Pro-5. Still waiting for an answer from sweden, they should know best and it still might be they don´t recommend it like Philipp posted.
In the meantime if you have to use it, may be don´t use the highest power levels just to be sure.

Cheers, Ulf

thanks, i just got the same reply from profoto themselves. they suggest not using full power either on a 7A. but this is a fine solution for running two B2 packs as they dont have the higher voltage.

so hopefully my gamble of buying a cheap pro-head twin off ebay will pay off. i guess i will know for sure when it turns up in the post.

thanks for everyones help!

If anyone is interested, yes a pro-6 head does work on a pro-7a pack (as well as 7b and b2). im in a 240v country though (as there may be issues with 110v)

i bought a pro6-twin head, and its working seamlessly, but i wont run it high power on two pro-7s just in case.
