P65+ corner with wides
« on: June 06, 2010, 06:46:19 am »

I've heard trough the grapefine, that some shooters are having not so good results in the corners with their Phase P65+ and extreme wides.
Anything wide than 47mm and from Schneider and Rodenstock.
Any comments from current users?
Could it be that the pixel pitch of the P65+ is doing the damage?

Vieri has shown impressive results here with his P65+ and Rodenstock 28mm HR

Really? Impressively sharp yes, but the noise in the corners is horrific for a base ISO capture IMHO, and low frequency blotchiness under the dials right at the very bottom of the second picture is very apparent too. This would have been a torture test though - with dark tungsten lighting really testing any chip, and it's probably being boosted 2 stops in the corners anyway because of the vignetting of the wide lens.

Is this the shadow noise recovery problem that is the subject of a recent thread?

This is caused or exacerbated by lightening the vignette with software instead of using a center-filter.

I believe that the P65+ (and the H4D-60) have micro-lens free sensors... (micro-lenses would tend to cause light fall-off with wides or movements).

The blue and yellow blotches would bother me most, but of course the luminance noise is very evident too.
Fall off should not be more than one stop with the 28hr considering to be stopped down at least 1 f.

i see the blotching as well with the rodenstock 28hr. have any of you used wide angles with your p65+ which do not suffer from luminance noise at the corners?

I've been happy with Rodenstock 35HR on the 65+, used 1 to 2 stops down (never more than 2 stops). However, before going to this lens, I had the Schneider 24XL, which was totally unacceptable on the 65+.

NO noise with the 24mm and center filter. Corners are totally black:).  Uh.... Much of sensor wasted on P65+
