Hello Michael,

See:

This seems to be an increasingly common (and useful) practice...and for good reason!

Hi Robert...chdk has been developed over a number of years...I started using it with my A630 about two years ago to get raw images from the camera...but, being on the mac platform getting software to read the files hasn't been easy but it's doable...and also adds a lot of other functions unavailable with the standard canon firmware/software...

I went back to using jpeg's cause i can't get a smooth workflow from the chdk raw files to say dng or something else that photoshop or lightroom can read...

here are some links to info if you're interested...

At least on my SD800, the CHDK outputs standard DNG! And that since I got it last summer : you may check new builds.
I agree that otherwise, this would have been of little interest for me due to the kinky workflow (I've once inadvertantly set the output to CHDK-CRW, and just couldn't get complete EXIF metadata from jpegs back in the DNG files).

I did recently try the chdk again, a few weeks ago, and still only got the crw files...couldn't get dng...I'll go back and look again, maybe i missed something...I hope i can, the raw files were much better than the jpeg images...i did download and tried to use this dng4ps-2 converter but on my mac it would convert two, three images then crash...impossibly frustrating when i had fifty or more images to convert...

thanks Niko...

I don't know how much menu differ between cameras, but for my SD800 it's in the main CHDK menu, RAW parameters, scroll down( or up) to the end of the menu and check both "DNG format" and "DNG extension".
You also need to have a dead pixel mapping file BADPIXEL.BIN in the /CHDK/ folder on the card (but a popup should display on the menu if you haven't).

I use it on my p&s, use DNG since it was available, very happy with the crack, couldn't live without it even.

alright, I reinstalled the chdk and did the badpixel thing...

now i get a folder with dng files and jpeg files of the dng's...

thanks Nicolas...

only thing, damn, image capture takes a long time...I'm guessing five seconds before I can take another shot...is that your experience too?

on the street, in cafes, things happen fast so i don't really like this speed hit...true, the image files are much better, but if i miss the shot what's the use?...

waiting till around september, then may buy an LX3 or something, S90?...I'm not sure, just want a faster raw shooting experience...I do like 'on paper' the new samsung ex1, waiting to see some reviews, image comparison...but also waiting to see if Nikon introduces a new small body, what michael has labeled 'marvil',  that i can put my lenses on...don't mind a slightly bigger camera so long as the image quality is there...I have played around with some raw files from a Ricoh gr d lll and those files are amazingly good coming from such a small sensor...but, feel bothered by only 28mm lens...the small zoom of the lx3 would do me good...whatever...thanks again...

I've been testing the EX1 for about a week now. Very impressive! Look for my review in a couple of weeks.

Maybe 4 seconds for me, and yes it's long, too long : same problem as older ricoh GRD or sigma DP1 from what I've heard.
Not that useful for street shooting indeed - but that wasn't my main use, which is rather documentary (work) and occasional landscape for my SD800.
Price/functionality ratio is still good in my book : especially, I wasn't very keen in putting as much as a (small) DSLR's body in a compact.
