Bah... there appears to be an issue with Mavericks. I loaded up 10.6.8 and everything talks to one another... unfortunately my Spectroscan table seems to be binding on the X axis when going from right to left as it's traveling back from aligning the 3rd patch in ColorPort. Up to that point though... everything is okay. Sigh. Might finally be time to put the Spectroscan to rest. :(

Give Youtube a search. I'm sure I've seen a tutorial on how to take a Spectrascan apart and clean it. It should be a pretty simple job, open it up, clean up any dust and debris inside, clean the support rails with a residue free solvent, then carefully lubricate with a dry lube (eg PTFE spray as used in woodworking machinery).
I just run mine on an old Windows laptop, no hassles at all.

If it isn't hardware (or you can clean and fix it), just get yourself an old MacBook on eBay and forget trying to get the Keyspan stuff to work. I tried too with that old adaptor and gave up, I spent far more than the $160 for an old MacBook in time and frustration.

Paul,

Yeah, one of the first things I did was to pop the top dust cover and clean the rails.

Andrew,

That makes sense... I do have a 2006 MacBook so maybe that will become its purpose in life. If I didn't have the need to do coated canvas I'd just get an Isis and be done with it but this little bugger (despite being a relic in computer years) is still extremely useful. Is the Barbieri still the only new option that has a polarizer these days?

I did manage to coax it through the scans I needed to do by mounting the chart as far to the left as possible. When I have a chance I'll give it a more thorough cleaning.

Cheers, Joe

Yes, I believe Barbieri is the only answer these days. It is a really nice and amazingly well built product. It has to be for that price.  ;D
