For those who are interested in things like this, one of my Yellowstone photographs was published as a full-page in UK's Digital Photographer Magazine, issue #95 (currently on the shelves in US):

Slobodan

That is amazing. What is it? Some kind of sulphur spring?

Had a look at your original - much nicer to see things on their own!

Amazing colours and a very attractive viewpoint.

Kudos!

Very nice picture. How did it make its way into the magazine?

Thank you all.

John, I believe this pool belongs to the Heart Lake Geyser Basin, in the southeast corner of the park, probably inside so-called Middle Group. The whole Basin does contain some sulfur springs, but if this is one of those, I am afraid I am not such an expert to either confirm or deny. But I do know that the amazing colors of Yellowstone ponds come from algae and bacteria, whose type and color vary with water temperature.

Popnfresh, I had a cover back in 2008 in the same magazine, so I check from time to time their current requirements, and they happened to need water photographs for an article they were planning recently. Unfortunately, as the sign of the times, back in 2008 I was paid decently for the cover, and nothing but credit for this one   I guessed they figured out if they can "crowd-source" decent images, why pay for them.

Just discovered that my Yellowstone photograph was also published in the Italian edition of the UK Digital Photographer Magazine (Photografare in Digitale, #61, September 2010, page 50), and wanted to say hello to our Italian friends :)

Excellent work Slobodan, so that's another well done and a well deserved slap on the back from me.

Can I ask, did you just send images to them in the hope the would print them?

I have been thinking for quite some time that I might also submit some of my images to the various UK magazines, but I am a bit wary of simply sending off a disk of my better shots, with nothing more than my fingers crossed and the hope that they actually get printed.

Any tips on how I should go about this and what loss of rights do you incur if any, as a result of them using your image(s)?

Thanks

Dave, in the case of this particular magazine (UK's Digital Photographer), it all started by me uploading an image to their readers' gallery. Several weeks later, I got an email, asking for permission to use it on the cover. They paid decently for it.

However, for photos inside the magazine, they use crowd-sourcing. In their forum section on the web, editors would often post what type of images they are currently looking for (in the case above, it was "water" images). You then send them an email with low resolution jpegs and if they like it for publishing, they would ask you to submit a full-size version. As with any crowd-sourcing, they do not pay for it.

Most other UK magazines have similar policies. Some would only accept CDs or DVDs, some also online submissions. And there are some who would even (surprise, surprise) pay for the use.

In terms of copyright, you retain it, they would credit you if printed, and use it only for the particular article. At least that was my experience so far.

Incidentally, they told me recently that they will print in a forthcoming issue a page or two with six of my New York photographs, together with my mugshot and a short text/bio :)
