Iceland Trip - Camera gear rides in its own seat...
« on: May 19, 2010, 06:32:31 am »

Well.. call me flabbergasted... After much to and fro email with Iceland Air my camera equipment now has its own seat...
I thought this might amuse a few here - especially those that have travelled a lot with heavy camera gear - I still cant quite believe it myself.

Based on the cost of filling your bag again after baggage handling worked it over a private seat is a bargin
not to mention being stress free. Have a great trip and Capture lots of Moments.

I'm getting more and more annoyed with airline policies.

Just make sure you're not going to run afoul of *airport* limits on the number of carry-ons, especially at Heathrow.  I don't know whether they will recognize the camera bag as a "passenger", but I doubt it.  They can often be quite nasty there about enforcing rules, even sometimes when you haven't actually violated them...

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Air Iceland flight 246 with service to Reykjavik. In preparation for departure, please stow all bags and carry ons in the overhead bins or area at your feet.

Be prepared to strap it in or put it under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment. This has nothing to do with a carrier being nasty and everything to do about safety. Every thing that is not strapped down can become a projectile and potentialy dangerous to others in moderate to severe turbulence. I have 35 years and 17,000 hours of commercial flying experience and I can tell you every story in the book. Regardless of what you are told before any flight the attendants on that flight can and will make you do what they personally want you to do with those items, so be prepared. (I'm not sticking up for them I just know how it works.)
You have done your homework and it sounds like all should go well. Have a great trip.
