Transferring Settings from CS4 to CS5
« on: May 16, 2010, 11:25:45 pm »

Can anyone explain the best way to transfer my old settings and workspace from CS4 to CS5?  I used the search function but didn't find what I am looking for.
Best,

If you saved them and gave them a name in CS4, they will be available on CS5. Look under options, color settings. The drop down menue should show the saved names. Long ago, I went through  the Ian Lyons Digital Darkroom tutorial on color management, and used it to do my settings. I saved them and called them "Ian Lyons Tutorial for CS4". they were available for CS5.
Hope this helps.

Just be happy CS5 has new tools like puppet warp and content aware fill, rather than developing an easy and accurate way to upgrade and copy all your settings.

(My first post on this site... Brief intro - New to DSLR photography, but not new to Photoshop and digital imaging!)

On the Mac, the location of a saved WorkSpace setting is:

Mac HD/Users/[ActiveUser]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS[X] Settings/WorkSpaces

On MS Win, one would likely need to enable options to view hidden files/folders. I will have to make a post later tonight for general location.

Although the following action was written more as a proof on concept, it does work. MS Win only:

http://members.ozemail.com.au/~binaryfx/Ph...ngs_Back-Up.zip

"Photoshop CS action .atn file to facilitate the process of saving and loading common Photoshop settings before upgrading or re-installing. Current active brushes, swatches, gradients, styles, patterns, contours, custom shapes and tool presets are automatically saved, while color settings require manual saving, before the action resumes and completes the back-up. A second action in the set will automatically replace the current active brushes, swatches, gradients, styles, patterns, contours, custom shapes, tool presets and color settings from the files generated by the first action.

NOTE: Actions, scripts, keyboard shortcuts, program preferences, proof setup and workspace are not handled by this simple backup action."

Hope this helps,

Stephen Marsh

I'm not sure that CS4 workspaces can be ported, as they have changed the way they work. You no longer save workspace changes, as they are auto saved.  You can make new ones, and they can be deleted, but they got rid of the save command in the menu.  I did not see my previous show up when I upgraded.  I wasn't too bothered, as I found that I wanted to create different palette arrangements with the new version anyway.

PS:  It doesn't work in all cases, but content aware fill is pretty sweet in many circumstance.  It seems surprisingly smart in many situations.

Workspace's, curves presets, gradient maps, brush presets, colour settings, plug-ins, scripts, actions, swatches, textures, keyboard shortcuts, colour profiles, tool styles, ACR presets, Bridge scripts, Bridge Workspace's...

The list goes on and every CS upgrade continues to be an unusual process of manual work and trial and error, only positive I see is the chance to backup and update all of the above in the process.

CS4 workspaces work just fine in CS5.

The need to have a portable method of moving settings has been highlighted to Adobe.

To get a complete list of all the locations of PS's preferences and settings go here. [Mac + Win]
PS prefs/settings

But I'm sure CS5 simply picked up CS4's settings and workspaces. But it's been a long time since I first installed CS5, so cannot be sure offhand.
Porting settings and prefs has been feature requested many times and John Nack is keen to improve it.
Also of note - when uninstalling PS you can elect not to remove preferences, so if you uninstall and want to retain prefs for another install, do not tick the remove prefs box.
