MY camera
« on: May 14, 2010, 06:08:46 am »

From the beginning of this year I started to collect bits and pieces to build a camera... my camera. I got different parts to work together, by making my own adapter, drilling holes so screws would fit etc...So finally after many round of eBay and trips to the post office (for missed shipments) everything is now together. Let me present.... MY CAMERA !

Cost of Major Parts
sliding back $350
cambo standard $60
focusing helical $130
graflok back $50
copal press shutter $90
47mm digital $700
Russian made Hasselblad finder $31

probably around $150 on shipping
probably around $100 on other materials

One of the most critical component is the linhof lens board and helical focussing
mount. I got it from a Chinese seller on ebay. The advantage of this is you can
put an extension tube (optional) between the lens board and the helical mount.
So you can mount any lens to this camera as long as you get the correct
extension tube.

The limitation of this setup is that it can't focus with a 35mm. I have a 47mm and
it's probably the widest this camera can take.

The part that took the most time to make is the cambo to linhof sliding adapter.
The adapter allows 13mm of shift left and right, the sliding back allows unlimited shift.
The adapter is made of acrylic and glued with acrylic glue. It is made to be 100%
form fitting so it can only go in and out of the mount if it is pulled squarely. There is
also a simple lock for security.

And because it is a sliding adapter, I can easily swap lens by swapping lens board.

I did this mainly for the fun of it. The camera works well, and you definitely can't
complain about the cost.

Cheers

Great job, Ruey! Maybe some kind of a double lock so that you don't accidentally release the back when you want to change the lens! And since the Cambo board is square, you could orient the sliding back left/right as well as up/down?

The camera from the front, left shift 13mm

Side view, focussing position

Side view, shooting position

Back view.
The sliding back is completely friction based, I tighten the screws to make it that way.
The reason for this is because after I turn the back adapter to a landscape format, I can't fit
locking screw. If I turn the adapter back to a portrait format, I can put back the locking screw.
The back adapter isn't rotatable, you require a screw driver to move it.... and they are held by
tiny screws.

A shots to show how the lens board adapter is made and work

If I turn the back adapter around and also the front lens board adapter, I get this. Useful
if I need to do a wide angle stitching. With the back adapter on landscape, I can get a 20mm
angle of view if I do a 3 image stitch. (compared to a 35mm angle of view)

I drilled 2 holes on the original part of the cambo camera so I can fit it to a tripod plate.
I put a small coin on the end to balance out the supporting points.
