Updated DxO Optics Pro

I see that V6.2 is now available for both Mac and PC

I've been using the Mac version for a couple of weeks and am finding that the noise handling and detail retention are quite good. In particular I was reprocessing some 1Ds images taken at its highest 1250 ISO and the improvement is very noticeable. My feeling is that I'll still be using it more for individual large prints, rather than my day to day commercial work.

The interface at last feels a bit more Mac like (well, the Mac version that is ;-) )

I'm hoping to get a more detailed review together in a couple of weeks, particularly since I'm about to get PS CS5 and I'm keen to see how it handles certain images, given the developments in ACR.

I've one quick example of a 1Ds file processed in DxO and ACR4 up at
http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/stuff/?p=479
I had to make a print from it the other day and thought I'd re-process the 2006 file to see what was better...

I've still got the RAW files I tested DxO RAW processing with when it first appeared, so it'll be interesting to see how things have changed. In particular, one sunset image that has always in the past been noticeably better in DxO.

Thanks for posting this Keith. I checked website and they have finally made the lens module available I've been desperate for. The Nikon f2.8 70-200mm VRII. I've had this lens since end of Nov 09 and been unable to use DxO.

I have stuck with V5.3.7 and became very dis-enamoured with them over not providing an 'Elite' service to photographers who had paid a premium rate for software whilst DxO brought out kit lens modules for the cheaper version software....

Yep, seems to be working very well on Mac so far.

Still not totally sold on the way DxO handles WB automatically, but other than that it is super when having to batch process a large amount of files to very good (if not optimal) quality without having to spend much human time. For those images that justify spending more time I prefer C1 corrections, colors and micro detail handling though. It seems that the gap has been reduced with 6.2 though.

I tried it on D3x and S90 images, and the improvement is obviously much larger with the S90 files where the native distorsion at 28mm feels huge when comparing to the DxO corrections. DxO really turns the S90 into a great performer.

Cheers,
Bernard

Yes, the white balance settings are something I'm not entirely comfortable with.  I do sometimes like to find a particular colour temp/tint for a group of images and apply it to all of them.

I've not tried out enough samples yet to see if this is a real problem or I just need to alter my way of looking at the problem ;-)

It works well for me, and I think the interface is MUCH better, especially the "select" screen.

I agree re the lens modules; there is *still* no module for the Canon 5D Mark II with Canon 85mm 1.2L II lens, which is not exactly a seldom-used lens.....

Keep in mind that this lens may be so good that it is not in need of major corrections for c/a, vignetting edge sharpness and distortion. And you can fine tune a lot of the corrections manually and save them as a "preset" for future use with this lens.  Likewise, my 17 and 24 TS-E lenses are not supported but the tiny bit of the c/a that they have is removed automatically. I don't seen any distortion or serious vignetting to remove.

Some of the strong points of DXO for me are the geometric tools that let me adjust my architectural images very quickly and the "DXO Lighting" tool that can add "fill light" to my shots.  It is terrific to be able to click on the image to toggle between the before and after versions.  And the batch processing is very strong. I can pull images into a project from various directories and save the processed images into separate folders that are associated wih the original files or into one folder for all the processed images. There has been a lot of thought put into the workflow.

Thanks for the tip Alan, I didn't know about the preset option. Yes, it is a good lens! Oddly, DxO seems to think it's an 85mm f1.8, as it selects this module for images made with the 1.2.

When you have an image in the project taken with this lens, you can click on the tool bar where it says "DXO Optics Module" and then click on "DXO Optics Module Ambiguity" and see if you can change or disable the 85 1.8 module from being selected for the 85 1.2.

Thanks again, Alan. Unfortunately DxO seems quite unambiguous about its lens choice, as nothing appears in the Ambiguity panel for images taken with the lens. Still, the output using the 1.8 module is good, and there is minimal change in the "distortion" of the image after processing. All the other corrections seem to work fine, so I'll live with it for now.

There are still a few issues I'm finding with the automatic lens selection - it keeps trying to download some Sigma lens module in lieu of
one (not yet released) for my EF14 2.8L II

I'm going through a lot of old and new files to see how it handles them - mostly very well, and i've found that the colour temperature options can be expanded to include a temp/tint slider

In general I've not found anything to put me off my preferred mode of using it for small groups of images rather than perhaps larger jobs - but I've not had a large enough fresh set of images since looking at it, to challenge my old ways of working :-)

Hopefully I can get a more detailed look at it published in the next week or so...
