DNG profile philosophical questions
« on: May 04, 2010, 07:56:12 pm »

I wonder if DNG profiles color tables are limited only to color samples that are ~ L* 50?
Is it possible to build more complex profiles that behave in a different way for various L* patch values?
Are DNG profile LUTs "flat" by design?

Hi Marcin, yes. The DNG profile format allows tables to be "3D", i.e., lightness-dependent.

However, the DNG Profile Editor currently only produces 2.5D tables (i.e., 2D input, 3D output). This is essentially a "flat" table. This is a limitation of the editor, not the profile or format.

Thanks a lot, Eric - I'll be waiting eagerly for 3D DNG Profile Editor then (not to mention 3D HSL tool in ACR/LR)!

Meanwhile - if someone knows 3rd party solution to create such 3D LUT, I'll be grateful for pointing me that out.
