Lightroom 3 Upgrade pricing

I own Photoshop CS3 but do not own any version of LR (other than having the version 3 beta installed)

I cannot find an answer to this using search and I called Adobe to ask this question, and it seemed to me it was too difficult for the person on the other end to grasp.

If I was to purchase LR2 today, would the upgrade to LR3 be free or would I need to pay the $99 upgrade charge in the future when LR3 is released?  

I understand that when a new product version is announced that Adobe will let you upgrade for free if you buy the previous version (in this case LR2) between the time of the announcement and subsequent release of LR3.  I am assuming that because LR3 is released as beta that it is "announced".

What is ultimately driving this question is that I would like to upgrade to CS5 and also take advantage of Adobe's offer to take 30% off LR when ordered with CS5.

Remember that LR3 Beta 2 is still a Beta, and there is a possibility (perhaps remote) that therre might even be yet another public Beta before the final release of LR 3. Thus, my speculation (I have no insider knowledge) is that LR3 is not yet quite in the "announced" category. I think the free upgrade policy for CS5 began when the official announcement came, just about a month ago, and it is only now beginning to ship.

Can you wait off on CS5 until LR3 is really announced? Might be worth the wait.

Hi,

Another question may be, "Do you really need CS5?". The idea may be that if you can do 90% of your processing with LR3 you may get around with what you have right now.

If you really need CS5 or not is really depending on what you do.
