RAM for Mac Pro Desktop?
« on: April 18, 2010, 10:46:14 pm »

I'm about to pull the trigger on getting a Mac Pro desktop (quad core), I currently use CS4 and will likely upgrade to CS5.

I currently have 8GB of RAM in my Mac Power PC. Some of my image files approach 2GB. Would I need less, or more, RAM in the Mac Pro? What are your thoughts?

thank you,

David

Hi,

I bought mine with 3GByte memory but upgraded to 16 GByte from OWC the same day it arrived.

8 GByte is the minimum I'd recommend.

Check this site for info:

http://macperformanceguide.com/index.html

Photoshop CS4 canot access more than 3GByte memory directly but CS5 will be able to access all memory you have.

Best regards
Erik

RAM for Mac Pro Desktop?

I've got a question about CS5 and RAM for an older Mac - it's a 2007 Mac Pro 1.1, 2.66 Dual-Core Intel. When I upgrade to CS5, will it be able to run in 64 bit and access all of my 24gb of memory? Or will I need to upgrade to a newer Mac Pro in order to be able to do this? Thanks!

I'm running CS5 on a 2006 MacPro Mactintel with 10.5.8 and it runs in 64 bit and sees all 16 gigs I've got. So, you should be fine with your 2007 machine. I've got a new MacPro with 32 gigs and running 10.6.3 and it's a lot faster than my old MacPro. So, updating to a new machine and OS would be useful. The question really is one of cost and timing...MacPros are "due" for an update, just don't know when.

Double ditto to Jeff! (What are you doing with such an old machine though!?)
