Two sunset images from yesterday
« on: April 16, 2010, 02:01:54 PM »

I've been haunting the east shore of Lake Tahoe before and after work lately, and last night the water was finally calm enough to offer reflections, with some color in the clouds. What do you guys think of these? Which works the best for you? What do you not like?

Too many sunrises...so tired...more coffee....

Also, if it is better etiquette to just keep posting new but similarly themed images in a similar thread I started earlier, please let me know and I will do so next time instead of starting a new thread.

Ditto - the 2nd for me has the best combination of composition and light. Very nice work and well worth the early wake up call.

My first impressions were that these were just too nice, too perfect. However they are certainly well done. Did you use a filter or enhance them afterwards?

Thanks to everyone for the comments.

I used a Tiffen polarizer, and a Galen Rowell 3-stop graduated neutral density filter, and a Daryl Benson 3-stop reverse neutral density filter. Then, just standard white balancing and curves adjustments and slight bumps in vibrance and saturation in Camera Raw - not more than +8-10 on each. The sunset really just was that pretty...

Hi Grant,

I like them all, but my favourite is the first one.
In the first one the translucent water and the rocks underneath are really well balanced against the background rocks and the gorgeous sky.
If you mind a very stupid suggestion I'd remove by cropping or cloning the small rock that is cut against the left border in #1.

The three Images are stunning, congrats!

Why is the water glowing?

 I like the third.

Thanks, as to the "glowing water" - not sure....Lake Tahoe could be radioactive, but my guess is the reflection from the sunset on the water makes it "glow." I used a polarizing filter, which is why you can see through the water to the bottom in the foreground. Does the brightness of the sunset reflection detract from the quality of the image for you? There are a lot of funky colors in this series, which is part of it's allure to my eye...but that's just me.
