Epson SP 9600 Printing/Profiling Problems
« on: April 01, 2010, 03:51:34 pm »

[**Note that this bug appears to be fixed by the new Epson Mac driver version 8.19 and available from the Epson Europe web site on 12th April 2010.**]

Recently a few people have reported difficulties printing from MacOSX 10.6 Snow Leopard to the Epson Stylus Pro 9600/7600/4000. With the MacOSX 10.6.3 update, Apple seem to have at last resolved problems printing to the Epson 7900 but not so with the 9600. It hasn't been entirely clear to me as to which OS, Photoshop and print driver  versions cause problems with the 9600 so I decided to run a series of tests in a similar way to my previous 7900 tests.

All the following tests were run twice on my 9600 with the same matte paper stock, the same ink set and the media setting set to Watercolour Paper - Radient White.
Firstly with an untagged test strip. CM disabled in PhotoShop and print driver.
Secondly with a ProPhoto RGB test strip. CM set to PhotoShop manages colours and disabled in print driver. Profile set to Watercolour Paper - Radient White. RC intent.

Table A:
Correct and identical results for both tagged and un-tagged test strips.

MacOSX 10.6.3 + CS4 + Epson driver v8.19. Intel Mac. 9600 *not* set to default printer.
MacOSX 10.3.9 + CS1 + Epson USA driver v1.9b. PPC Mac. 9600 set to default printer.
MacOSX 10.4.11 + CS1 + Epson USA driver v1.9b. PPC Mac. 9600 set to default printer.
MacOSX 10.4.11 + CS4 + Epson USA driver v1.9b. PPC Mac. 9600 set to default printer.
MacOSX 10.4.11 + CS1 + Epson driver v3.09. PPC Mac. 9600 set to default printer.
MacOSX 10.4.11 + CS4 + Epson driver v3.09. PPC Mac. 9600 set to default printer.
MacOSX 10.5.8 + CS1 + Epson driver v3.09. PPC Mac. 9600 set to default printer.
MacOSX 10.5.8 + CS1 + Epson driver v3.09. PPC Mac. 9600 *not* set to default printer.
MacOSX 10.5.8 + CS4 + Epson driver v3.09. PPC Mac. 9600 set to default printer.
Windows XP + CS2.
Windows XP + CS4.

Table B:
Incorrect results for both tagged and un-tagged test strips.

MacOSX 10.5.8 + CS4 + Epson driver v3.09. PPC  Mac. 9600 *not* set to default printer.
MacOSX 10.6.3 + CS1 + Epson driver v3.09. Intel Mac. 9600 set to default printer.
MacOSX 10.6.3 + CS1 + Epson driver v3.09. Intel Mac. 9600 *not* set to default printer.
MacOSX 10.6.3 + CS4 + Epson driver v3.09. Intel Mac. 9600 set to default printer. (Note: The untagged test strip did not even print!!!)
MacOSX 10.6.3 + CS4 + Epson driver v3.09. Intel Mac. 9600 *not* set to default printer. (Note: The untagged test strip with this combination seemed almost correct to my naked eye.)

And my conclusions? I suspect that the Epson 9600 print driver is the main problem but I doubt it will be updated.
I won't be using MacOSX 10.6 Snow Leopard for printing to my Epson 9600.

Edit1: Added default printer combinations.
Edit2: Bug appears fixed by new Epson Europe driver version 8.19.

So there is no sollution to use my Epson 7600 with CS3 or CS4 under 10.6.3 ?
Maybe printing with another program under Rosetta?

What about sheetfeeding? I have no idea how to select that with the current driver

Someone has a motherboard for my second broken Epson 7600?

Sorry but as I haven't tested CS3 I can't properly comment on whether or not it would work.
You would need to compare your CS3 test results against a known good combination from my list above.
Can you borrow a Windows XP system? If so, download and install the CS4 30 day trial and print some tagged and untagged test strips.

Can you budget a new for a new printer?
The only printer I have at the moment that has consistently just worked out of the box is the HP Z3200.

If you are using MacOSX 10.6.3 then setting up sheet feeding on the 7600/9600 is just the same as the 7900 etc.
For example using pre-defined US Letter or A4 in PhotoShop.
Go to File, Page Setup.
Select the 7600.
Click on Paper Size and choose US Letter or A4.
*Then* expand your selection and select Sheet.
Select Landscape or Portrait.
Click on OK.

Thank you for this explanation. Now it works with sheet paper.
After updating Snow to 10.6.3, I have deleted the drivers and reinstalled the printer.

Now I get a totally different interface. Something with about 30 finetuning menu's. Never seen before

However printing with a 7600 paper profile gives very strange colors. When I use a SRGB profile in the CS3 printing interface, I get better colors. But not correct. And I'm not supposed to put that profile overthere, I think.
So are profiles different for other versions of operating system and photoshop version?

Is there a chance that I can get it to work if I buy a Color Munki and make my own profile?

Can I get a profile for a 7600 with CS3 and 10.6.3 with glossy  Epson paper?

I haven't seen this posted, but the new 8.19 drivers for the Epson 9600/7600 work correctly in every way with 10.6.3 and PSCS4. Prints unmanaged targets correctly and prints using custom profiles print exactly the same from ID using the old path as PS or LR using the new path.

Thank you Doyle
So there is a new driver for allmost 2 weeks and I didn't knew it.
I'm very exited to try it out.

Finally Epson made an update for an old printer.

Indeed the Epson Europe Stylus Pro 9600 Mac driver version 8.19 seems to work correctly.

I have just tested both untagged without CM; and tagged with CM and in both cases the v819 driver provided a correct print with MacOSX 10.6.3 and PhotoShop CS4.

Well done Epson Europe!

It is just a shame that Epson UK couldn't be bothered to update their web site with the new driver but then again I am not really surprised at all. Epson UK support is almost non-existant in my recent experience.
