Okay. I'm starting to print the large central piece for my upcoming exhibit. It's a 44"x74" canvas. I have a brand new roll of 44" canvas loaded. The only part of it that was used was for the color profile creation. So there's plenty left on the 40 foot roll.

However, when I go to print -- using the page size definition of 44x74 or 43x74, and telling Photoshop to fit the image to the page, I get a printer driver error that says the print job exceeds the loaded paper size.

In my HP Utility, the length of the roll is listed as unknown. I don't know how to fix that, or if that has anything to do with the problem.

I need to print out today, so I can do the coating tonight and do the mixed media additions tomorrow night. Panic time.

Any advice?

Many thanks, Sally

Sally,

I don't think it is telling you that the roll has not enough length but it has a conflict between the size you want to print and the page size you defined.  Not on the 44 or 43" but on the 74".  Define the page size longer and see what it does then. It is still within the maximum length the plain Z3200 can print so that isn't the issue either.

Hi Ernst:

I tried that. I defined a page of 44"x80" and it still gave me the error.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Sally

The actual error is "Paper size selected (width:44.00 inches, height: 80.00 inches) is larger than the loaded paper (width: Unknown). How do tell the HP that it has a 44" roll loaded?

Thanks, Sally

Actually, looking at the HP Ulitity, it knows that I have 44" roll loaded. Now, I'm really flumoxed.

The only thing you haven't mentioned is whether or not you have the image oriented in the right direction.  I'm guessing here, but it might be possible that your printer thinks you want to print 74 inches wide and 44 inches long instead of 44 inches wide and 74 inches long.   Look for a check box allowing automatic orientation or changing the orientation in your preferences/utility.  Something has to work.

Edit: Sorry, I see now that in post #4 you defined that the utility sees the 44" as width and the 80" as length.

I'm on Windows and Qimage but in the driver the printer reports the width it measures, it may measure a slightly smaller width than the 44".

The maximum image size should be 0.4" less on both directions than the page size defined, in case of a roll, with sheets there is more printer margin on the length.

I thought about that, too. However, I tried a page size of 43" width, and it still didn't work.

I even tried a width of 32", just to see what would happen, and I still get the same error.

Here's a wild shot at it: in my iPF5000, in defining a custom roll paper size, dimensions are reversed from the conventional use of height and width in viewing a panorama. "Width" cannot exceed the roll width, and "height" is the length of the print, as if in portrait orientation. But it is printed in landscape orientation, and shows properly in print preview.

In other words, all my roll paper sizes are defined as if they are in portrait orientation. So it sounds like you may have reversed the dimesions. Have you tried defining a width of 44" and height of 80"?

Good idea, Pete. However, the HP driver won't let you define a page in which the width is longer than the length. So, it automatically corrects that scenerio.

SOLVED!!!! I'm printing! Hurray!

Apparently, it's a Photoshop problem. Not the driver. After trying everything I could think of, including working on three different computers, saving to all kinds of file formats, reducing the image to 8 bits and then flattening all the layers, the only thing that worked was to copy the image into a new image window. I think something had become corrupt with the original file.

One day lost, with only three until the installation. But who cares? I'm printing again. And, it looks great. Gawd, I love this Z3200. The quality of what is coming out is great -- exactly what I expected. Still, when you see the reality, it's wonderful. This is why I was so inspired in the first place to push myself into mixed media, because of what I can get out of this printer.

Thanks to all for you brainstorming and efforts to help.

Now, I think I'm going to have a fist full of chocolate and get working on stretching the smaller canvases. I've got a couple of long nights ahead of me.

Thank you, Sally

One other setting helped, even on the original file ... In the Features tab of the print driver, if you select AutoRotate, it gives you the option of setting the media width. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a 44" option, but the 42" option worked. What a relief!
