Horsepower vs Torque
« on: March 19, 2010, 10:25:51 am »

In his editor's comment on the Two Things You Can't do on the Internet, Micheal alluded to a technical discussion of horsepower vs torque. Bewildered by the technical discussion, he stated that he would just get in his car and drive away, apparently ignoring the specifications. The following analogy demonstrates that, depending on the intended use, specs do matter.

The horsepower ratings are similar, but if you want to push around some dirt, you would likely choose the Caterpillar. If you wanted to go down the highway in comfort and speed, you would likely choose the Porsche. If you needed a better value for transport, you might choose a Ford Focus. The same considerations apply to cameras. If you need resolution and the highest image quality, you would likely choose a P65+. If you need portability, a wider choice of lenses, and a good cost:performance you might choose the D3x.

With the first one, you can earn in return more money than you previously invested, and then buying you a Lambo (wich is much more fun than the boring Porshe).
while with the second one, if you will certainly attract a lot of blonde girls, you can spend much more money than you have invested.
So, yes, specs do matter.

On the other hand, you may have more (short-term) fun than you expected...

I remember a quote that went something like:

"Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car, oversteer with the back. Horsepower is how fast you hit it and torque if how far you take the wall"

Now that is a nice way to start a new day! Thanks for the giggle - they are rare.

I had to use a dictionary to get this quote, but very nice!
