MacPro & Recommended mouse?
« on: March 15, 2010, 09:25:22 pm »

After 4 months of frustration with both the Apple Mighty Mouse and Magic Mouse driving me crazy I'm now ready for a change.  The Bluetooth on the MacPro sucks and there are numerous postings in other forums about this problem (there are solutions available but for the MacPros before the new 2009 model).  Some people are using Bluetooth USB dongles and others like myself are using a wired mouse (which works great).

I would like to use a wireless mouse... what are you using if it's not an Apple product?

Or, do you have a real solution for the known Apple bluetooth problem?

Thanks

It's always been a very well known fact that Apple mice are the worst.  For the past 12 years I have been using logitech mice and that's all I use.  100% wireless Logitech mice, take your pick.  I use the various laser mice, but amazingly one of my favorites is the logitech trackball.

Despite everyone saying they are "the worst," I really love everything about my bluetooth Apple mouse even with the short battery life.

By contrast, I had a Logitech version that worked but was ugly and felt bad in the hand. I use a tablet for all my PS work, though. Have you considered this option? It takes some getting used to but you can actually achieve very superior results with just a small learning curve.

I have no problems with my Apple mouse on my MacBook Pro or on my old iMac... just the MacPro.

I used to have a Wacom tablet... but I have a 17 year old son and now he uses it with photoshop.

I love my Magic Mouse on my new iMac, but I understand that it doesn't work so well on the MacPro. I have a Logitec wireless mouse at work on my G-5 tower, and it's fine. The scroll wheel occasionally decides not to scroll, but that's all. The Logitec mouse isn't Bluetooth, it uses some sort of USB dongle.

As for the tablet, I use the big Wacom Intuos 3 at work, and bought a cheap Wacom Bamboo for home use. DO NOT DO THIS! The nib on the Bamboo pen moves around, which completely destroys any sense of control. The tablet itself is small, and there is no hand rest area, making it very uncomfortable to use.  I need to suck it up and spend the money on an Intuos tablet for home.

I have been happy with a Logitech Cordless Click Plus for years.

To be honest, and I say this with a slight irony, I find OEM Microsoft wired mice the best. They're really cheap and last forever. I've tried all sorts of Logitech gadget mice and they all fail after some months. Keep it simple. Oh...and get your tablet back off your son.

Ahh... but if I got my old tablet back I couldnt' justify buying a new one.

The apple wired mouse I'm using seems to skip to a differnt location all on its own.  Wierd.  Maybe it's the desk surface I'm working on.  The wireless one doesn't do it but this it's jittery motion due to the poor bluetooth reception makes it unusable too.

I'm going to try a USB bluetooth option with my wireless and see how it goes.

I've been using Bluetooth mice with the internal Bluetooth (on a PowerBook, then a MacBook, now a MacBook Pro) for years with no problems. The lack of a dongle to use up a precious USB port on a laptop is great!
On a desktop machine I wouldn't mind using a device with a proprietary wireless interface, but on a laptop the ability to use Bluetooth is important to me.

The one I use now is a Logitech V470 "Travel Mouse". Runs off 2x AAs, has an on/off switch underneath, and the scroll wheel tilts left/right for sideways scrolling.

Update: I bought an external Bluetooth dongle and plugged it into the USB on the keyboard and disabled the internal bluetooth in my MacPro.  Now I have smooth performance from my mouse as I had always expected.  All I can say is WTF? is up with Apple and not fix this?

I ordered a new Wacom tablet to replace the one my son borrowed (LOL) from me.

I hate Apple mice with a passion.

I use a razer salmosa mouse, designed for gamers I think. Very accurate, and has adjustable frequencies and resolutions for the IR patch.

I have the Bluetooth Mighty Mouse, and while it works well with my MacBookPro, and looks cool, the ergonomics just don't work for me when I'm spending hours at a time at the computer. I keep hoping that someone will come out with a full-size cordless bluetooth mouse; the mini "laptop" mice aren't very good for extended use either.

I'm sure it's sacrilege to hook up a Microsoft mouse to a Mac, but I've found a MS cordless USB Intellimouse that fits my hand and works quite well with my MBP. Just wish it was blue-tooth and didn't require the USB connection.

I decided to get a top of the line gaming mouse. Fortunately two of the best gaming mice have Mac drivers. I went with Razer the latest model 3500dpi "Death Adder", but the SteelSeries XAI might be even better.
