I just picked up one of the new Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS USM II lens. When you spend $2500 on a lens, you don't want to put a bad piece of glass in front of it. Prices range from low (Tiffen), to high (many brands). Recommendations? Is it necessary to spend big bucks to get good glass?

Congratulations on the new Mk 2.  I have a copy of the original 70-200 2.8 L IS that has been a workhorse for me.

I like B+W for UV filters, but otherwise use Singh-Ray's LB polarizer and  Vari-ND filters.

Thanks for the recommendations. I went ahead and ordered B+W filters yesterday.

I'd like to continue by saying that we are in one of the most expensive fields in the industry. Technology drives the market. Computers become obsolete in five years. Cameras and lenses make incredible advances. I end up turning all of my profit back into gear.

A friend of mine just bought a Canon 7D. He said that it took him him weeks to learn all the settings. Each lenses can be attached to the body, and calibrated for focus (via a menu). I don't know about you, but I just want to shoot and produce good art. i get a little tired of having to learn new technology.

Heliopan, B+W and rodenstock are very similar... and prices varies...

be carefull there's fake B+W around !

I think they "found" the results by carefully controlled testing - or maybe I misunderstood.

What this thorough test seems to reveal (and I admit I knew next to nothing about the issues involved before reading it) is that as so often in the field of photographic accessories, you don't always get what you pay for. In this respect the industry sometimes resembles the fashion business where brand image is everything.

Take a look at Formatt filters, they are meant to be among the best and less expensive than B+W, Heliopan et al.
