Iceland trip April 24th to May 3rd
« on: March 10, 2010, 08:41:02 am »

I from London and Alain Pilon from Montreal are meeting at Keflavik airport and heading off in a rented SUV to wherever our fancy takes us in Iceland. Flights from Boston and London are reasonable then and there's 16 hours of daylight. If you are interested to join this trip then please . The good bus system allows slightly different dates to work.

Just a bump really. I'll be arriving from London on the 23rd April and will wallow in the Blue Lagoon. Alain arrives from Boston at 6.30am 24th and I'll meet him with an SUV. We'll drive 3 hours to near Snaefellsjokull, the highest mountain, a volcano, the site of Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth. We'll spend 2 or 3 days in a comfortable hotel (about $55 each per night) shooting around this National Park. then we'll head along the north coast to Akureyri and eventually round the whole island - probably about 1100miles with detours over 10 days.

We're pretty excited as we'll get good deals on hotels and SUV rental when there's plenty of daylight and very few tourists. We'd still enjoy the company and cost sharing of a compatible photographer or two, fit enough to enjoy some mild hiking or worse. A chess player and whisky drinker would be ideal.

There are great, cheap flights from T.O. on Iceland Air, although their service from Halifax doesn't start until May.

If you guys were doing this a month later, I'd be there! I'm not sure how much longer their FX is going to be so skewed.   Meanwhile, I'm looking at June, so any tips, tricks, or advice re:Iceland would be appreciated.

Alain and I had a great trip! Keflavik airport shut, so we were both routed via Glasgow to Akureyri in the north. This was much worse for him coming from Montreal, but Akureyri is a fine alternative to start from.

The big takeaway is that end April/ early May is a fantastic time to visit Iceland. The only negative is that the interior roads are impassable, but Iceland is almost all wild anyway and in 10 days we only scratched the surface. The place is empty, empty, empty. Many of my shots were just stopping the SUV in the middle of the road, turning off the engine, and bracing a long lens against the window frame. There was almost no traffic. We had wonderful locations like the basalt column cliffs of the Snaefells peninsula all to ourselves for hours on end. The light was much more than ample with 16 hour days and long twilights. There's also a chance of A. Borealis in April as shot by someone over the volcanic eruption. We didn't need to book ahead and it was significantly cheaper than in the summer.

Anyway lovely trip. Driving was a pleasure...I guess we did about 1400 miles.

I should add that I'm thinking to go back end April/early May 2011 to concentrate on the North West, ie Snaefells and the NW fjords. For fellow Britons it's worth realizing that it's only a 6 hour flight and drive to these spectacular locations. There's wi-fi in every guest house / hotel and the long days and emptiness make it relaxing. So if any photographers want to think ahead with me...
