Leaf Aptus-II 7/AFi-II 7 vs Aptus-II 10/AFi-II 10
« on: March 10, 2010, 02:30:52 am »

Dear all:
are there users on this forum that have first-hand experience with both Leaf Aptus-II 7/AFi-II 7 and Aptus-II 10/AFi-II 10 systems? Question: how does the 10 behave vs the 7? Advantages, disadvantages? Are there quality differences in file output (other than the higher resolution, of course)? The image ratio is different (traditional MF 4:3 for the 7 and traditional 35mm 3:2 for the 10), does that affect the decision? Any other considerations? Thanks.

Hi,
I know the Leaf systems rather well and own the AptusII7 at the moment and shot on some demos with the AptusII10.
The AptusII7 is an amazing back, it has a very nice quality and somehow I see a bit more depth in the images compared to the Aptus22.
Personally I don't want a crop (or at least as small as possible) so I mainly focus on the Aptus series that has the larger sensors.

The AptusII10 is indeed a 3:2 sensor which has to fit your style.
I absolulty love the quality you get from the AptusII 10, portraits on f16 are still very sharp.
The real difference is the aspect ratio.
PERSONALLY I love the 4:3 format but we have a problem printing that over here because the format of the A papers are more in the area of 3:2 than 4:3 so when shooting I have to remember to leave a bit space to crop later.
However this is hardly ever a problem, and also with 3:2 some cropping is done.

You have MORE than enough resolution with both backs to crop and with the AptusII 10 you can without a problem crop to 4:3 of course with different helpful options.

If I had to choose it would be difficult.
Although I absolulty love the AptusII10 the price range of the AptusII7 is much more attractive and the AptusII7 is faster in transfer to the mac/pc.

So it would depend on what you shoot, for a landscape shooter I think you will be more than happy with the AptusII10, for portrait and fashion I "think" the AptusII7 is maybe the best choice also due to the format.

Hi Frank,

thanks for this information. How could you compare the transfer time of the Aptus 10 in relation to the Aptus 7?
This is an aspect I was not thinking of when I eyeballed the Aptus10, I just looked at the frame rate.

Cheers, Ulf

In Leaf Capture the AptusII10 is not as fast as the AptusII7 which is normal of course, but still it's reasonably fast even with bursts.
Under Capture One the AptusII10 is at the moment way too slow, but they will fix that in a future release, Capture One is still a lot slower than Leaf Capture at the moment.

Frank, is this in tethered use or when transferring/importing raw images ?

rolleiflexpages, I think Frank is referring to tethered. The transfer times with a tethered Aptus II 10 are quite reasonable, not really an issue. Looking only on the image quality differences, the Aptus II 10 produces a smoother and more detailed result which I tend to prefer compared to the Aptus 7. It's really a step up compared to Aptus 7.

Tethered indeed.
Working on the files on my Macpro 8 core there is almost no difference, only as expected some filters run a bit slower on the AptusII10 files.
For me the AptusII7 is an upgrade from my Aptus22, after that I will see what happens but the 10 is still very high on my list.
