I'm norwegian myself, though I have never been north of Trondheim.
But I'm sure you're gonna have a great trip, there are commercials on national TV here that makes me wanna go to northern norway rather than some exotic country like NZ.

Thanks very much, Jan.  Since I'm accustomed to going places off-season, I have good warm rain clothes!

I'm also more interested in the aurora than in the midnight sun, and I'm hoping to see a little on this trip.

If you spent some time south of Bodo, perhaps you might be able to help me with a decision - if you had only one day to see Saltfjellet-Svartisen Park, would you drive inland into the Beiardalen Valley, or take the coast highway winding around the fjords, or somewhere else?

Thanks

Thanks very much for your comments, Jan.  I'll definitely take the coast road, and look for the places you mention.  I was in the more southern parts of Norway a few years ago and really enjoyed it, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this trip too!

Thanks,

I'll be going to the Lofoten Islands (off northern Norway) and the nearby area around Bodo at the end of September.  Has anyone here been in that area?  Any suggestions as to good places for photography and/or hiking?  I have one full day in Bodo, during which I plan to drive down to Svartisen Nat'l Park for the day unless anyone can suggest something better.  In the Lofotens, I'll have about five days.  (I've been to Norway before, but just the more southern parts of the country.)  Suggestions?

Thanks
Lisa

P.S.  Any comments on weather that time of year?

I'm another national and I spent five days in the Bodø and southwards area end of May, I can really recommend the area. There are ample opportunities for any kind of landscape photography you mighte engage in. As for the weather, it shouldn't be too bad, temperature will most likely be above freezing, at least at fjord level, although it can get wet and windy. Bring rainclothes and things that can keep you warm in cool, strong winds.  The famous midnight sun is gone at that time and around equinox (21 sept) days and nights are equally long and the same all over the globe. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

My pleasure, Lisa.

Re Aurora, you might see some, although the deep winter nights are usually better than early fall. Actually there's no telling when it occurs the most spectacularly. That depends largely on solar activity.

Concerning where to go south of Bodø, you'll find more variety along the coastline, that is the scenery is more spectacular. If you follow the coastal road past Ørnes you will also go through a tunnel beneath Svartisen and get to a spot on the north side of Holandsfjorden where you get nice views of the glacier and one of it's arms. Since the roads largely follow the shore line and the mountains (mostly jagged nunataks from the last glacier age) that rise to about 1000 meters, there is lots of dramatic and nice scenery. And I might add, almost regardless of wheather. I have travelled both routes and in my opinion the coastal one is the more spectacular. You can get to Beiarfjorden (not all the way to the bottom of it, but sufficiently close), by turning left just after the bridge across Kjellingsundet, to Kjelling and proceed along the gravel road as far as it goes. Some spectacular scenery as well as the rear of Bjørvasstindan (The sharp peaks just south of the fjord at Bodø, cearly seen from the airport).

I haven't travelled Lofoten by road, yet, but I have flown a lot in the area. Your'e in for some more spectacular countryside. I don't think I can offer you any particular advice there.

Again, hope this can be of some help and happy trip!
