AA batteries on Phase One DF
« on: March 05, 2010, 05:06:18 pm »

For use with the new Phase One 645 DF, does anybody have any experience with the Powerex MH-C204W charger and the Powerex AA 2700mAh Rechargeable NiMH Batteries?
And/or, do you have any experience worth sharing with other battery/charger combinations?

Thanks John-S!
Maybe once I have my Powerex batteries and charger (already ordered), I'll try the Eneloop and see how they compare.

Batteries in the mamiya based camera are a pain in the ass... When i bought my PhaseOne 645 AF i thought "well, i can live with it..." but it's a big problem! That camera eats battery as a devil! i have eneloop with the maha charger now, i'm testing it... with the eneloops i can take around 400 frames in a single session, but if you take 5 photos today, then turn off the camera, tomorrow take 5 frames... the day after tomorrow you turn on the camera, set up a shot, lock the mirror up... the camera won't shot due to no battery life... the best thing is having 2 ready to go battery holder full of eneloop 100% charged and one spare battery holder with duracell or lithium ion energizer. This is the way i'm going now and i can work fine. the biggest problem is that the battery holder costs 60 euros...

I never thought I would get crazy about rechargeable AA's. I got so tired of rechargeable AA's that would lose most of their charge sitting for a few days to a week. So I bought somewhere around 40 or more Sanyo Eneloop AA's. Hands down the best rechargeable AA on the market. They pack plenty of power and can hold their charge for extended periods of time. Reportedly 80-90% over six months. I regularly leave batteries in everything for quite a while and not worry. These are equivalent in use to regular AA's but a thousand times over in useful lifetime. Any other rechargeable just can't hold a candle to the Eneloops. I put them in speedlights, pocketwizards, Canon AA grip holders, audio gear, etc.

I bought them all here: https://www.batteriesinaflash.com/

Been using them a long time and they seem to work the best. Actually need to order some more. Also in the Custom functions which I believe is number 7 that you have it set for 0 for regular alkaline and 1 for rechargeable. Need to double check this but I think i have it right.

BTW on the DF body I seem to get longer life as well. I have 3 battery holders and just load them up when needed

The word "soon" is the most used now about mfdb  by the way, i guess that grip will fit just the DF...

I heard April as well. I had no issues with the battery holder coming apart except those orange plastic covers over some of the contacts. I just super glued one down

I´m still using AFDII (with the Sinar back) and I take automatically batterys, with the holder, out of the camera and I do it always when the camera is not in the use. It helps to provide batterys longer life.... The battery holder will fit only Mamiya DF  - otherwise I would be very much surprised and happy about it.

Two thoughts - first, I agree about the Eneloops. They are THE best. Second, the new DF gets OVER 500 shots on a new set of AAs. The "leakage" problem with the AFD cameras has been solved with the DF. If you have the older cameras, remove the battery pack when not in use.

One thing that i always loved about sinar is that i can buy a 30 years old norma and using it with accessories of the sinar p2 that i can buy new now...
I bought the phaseone 645 af about 1 year ago and now i can't use the new accessories on it... if i want the battery grip i have to but the DF, if i want to use the leaf shitter lenses i have to buy the DF... If you can use hasselblad, leaf, phaseone together you will find, in my point of view, that the differences about quality, color etc etc are minimal, nothing about them have told me "this is the best!" Yes, i have read about the test between hasselblad multishot and phaseone, for me this means nothing. A web test it's not a good test, i have to try a camera in my workflow. But i know one thing, these cameras are expensive, you can't buy a phaseone and a hasselblad... 15 years ago we could buy a mamiya rz67 and a hasselblad 6x6 for different task, we could buy a sinar 4x5. But now, we can buy just 1 mfdb sistem, too much money around it. So now, tell me, where is going to my investiment on phaseone if i have to spend 5500 euros for a new body just to use the new really expensive leaf lenses and a batterygrip? I'm not an engeneer, i'm a photographer, and i'm sure there is a very important problem of compatibility between the Af and the DF...
