mamiya 645 pro/digital back
« on: March 01, 2010, 10:12:33 pm »

I am the owner of a couple of 645 Pro bodies.  I used them well with film but after sitting for a few years and seeing prices come down,
I am wondering what digital backs would fit the Pro? I also wonder how they would hook up and if it worth the effort?

Hi Harvey,

I have the Pro and use it with an Imacon 132c via an adapter plate. You can use any of the ixpress backs on the pro, including the brand new ones hasselblad have.
With the back attached you have a cable that comes out of the adapter plate that plugs into the electronic sync plug so the back knows when a picture is taken. ISO information is transferred to the camera meaning that you can still use auto exposer, although I don't think this is the case with the older square sensor only adapter plates.

You can also get sinar backs for the pro, again with an adapter plate.

I think it's worth the effort and love the combo, all the pro lenses look great on my 22mp back, and I think most would also look good even on 39mp.

If you have any other questions let me know.

Jason

Hi Jason,
I recently picked up a Fuji GX 680 and was looking at one back for both cameras - one of my camera store friends(no friend to my bank account though), told me about a new Hasselblad 39mp back  and I am thinking about it as I have aquired some money ... where does one find the adapter plates for these older cameras?

You can only use Ixpres, CF (II) and CFMS backs. Not the new CFV ad the adapterpaltes for that one is not supposed to be removable. I still have a spare adapter for the Fuji Gx680, a fun combo with a back.

Harvey:

You might also consider purchasing a Phase One or Leaf digital back with a Phase One AF or DF bundle. When purchasing the camera bundle with a back purchase the camera kit price is reduced in the neighborhood of 50%. All of your lenses for your 645Pro will fit on the AF and DF, plus you will have the option of auto focus lenses, Hasselblad CF/FE lenses, Pentacon lenses, and all the accessories for the AF/DF. A lot of bang for the buck.

Just something to consider.

IMHO the 645 pro is a far more appealing camera than the AF. although the AF is a lot more high-tech, the 645 pro feels like a professional camera. fully modular, well weighted, lenses like a 2.8 300 and 1.9 80, and working L/S lenses 20 years ago!

i wonder how they went so wrong with the later models. Im sure they will keep working on the AF to make it appealing again, but why they threw away a lot of nice features with the AF.
the AF still looks like a students solid works project.

Don't disagree about the AF as I have pointed out before.....

http://www.captureintegration.com/category/steve/

But that said, it does focus, meter and take the picture when you press the button, and the fact it takes an amazing assortment of lenses, including all of the lenses that will work on the 645 Pro, like the 1.9 80mm, 2.8 300mm, Hasselblad lenses, etc, it's a worthy consideration when you factor that an AF camera kit with an 80mm lens only adds $2,000 to any Phase One or Leaf digital back.

Otherwise, the DF is a product that has clearly graduated with honors, so while it does cost a bit more than an AF, plug that in if a nicer camera is desired. It still works with all of the above lenses.

If nothing else, this option allows you to consider every digital back on the market instead of only one.

The 645 Pro is  a nice camera, I used one for several years. However, after moving up to the 645 AFD and PhaseOne P45+ I don't miss the Pro except occasionally the eye level viewfinder would be nice to have.

Steve,

Is this really important anymore?

I mean in real world numbers I've spent about $60,000 on various digital backs for my contax and what is the camera worth, I dunno with all the bodies and lenses I have maybe $15,000 . . . maybe less or more depending and probably could sell the cameras pretty easily.

My point is I don't loose much selling a camera, (actually in the instance of my Contax' probably very little) . . . it's the back where you take the hit.  I mean what could I get for a P30+ and a P21+ in today's market.  I can promise you the depreciation will be much more than what someone would loose on a camera body and some lenses.

Isn't that why the medium format business model is based on upgrades rather than used sales?  I'm asking, because I don't know what goes on in the conference rooms of the medium format makers, but I do know you take a lot less of a hit upgrading than you do changing brands of digital backs, which is one of the reason the initial purchase seems so  fraught with indecision and I think one of the reasons you see such brand loyalty.

Once in  . . . your really in.

Right - I mean to a degree. What I meant was if someone was to consider a 645 Pro, the only current digital back that could go on it would be a Hasselblad CF (there may be some other back, I just don't know which, but I think that's it). So, if someone was starting from scratch, by bringing the AF or DF bodies into the mix, they have the option of Hasselblad CF, Sinar eMotion, all Phase One backs and all Leaf backs. That paints a very different picture.

And actually, while upgrades generally are a better value than selling your back and starting over, it's not always the case and not always a substantial difference. Just depends. But regardless, there's upgrades and there are trade-ins, and trade-in programs have been pretty aggressive the last 6 months. So, even if you wanted to switch digital back brands, you wouldn't necessarily take a hit on the value of what you had to trade.

I think ebay has the fuji adapter at the moment, and the mamiya one was for sale on here a month ago, put up a want to buy and see who responds as I can't find it any more.
Plus contact hasselblad to see what they have, they will point you to a dealer.

And this is something else I love about they pro - battery life, I have had the same batteries in the grip for over a year. And the little battery in the body lasts longer. Yesterday I was out shooting in Joshua Tree and the small battery died on me, it was only a week old so must have been a dud, this was a soon as I got there so I thought that was the end of that shooting day, until I took the AE finder off that drained a lot of power and I could continue shooting the rest of the day, right until my last shot when it died for good! Try that with the AF. The batteries in this last forever.
And in very cold weather you can lose the grip and manually wind it.

For the 645 Pro you might try checking out MegaVision -  http://mega-vision.com/e6.html. They had a back for the Pro five years ago and I think they still do. But, I would bite the bullet and move to the AFD and a Phase back. Actually, I did four years ago.
