open source softwares

Hi,
I actually use Adobe Premiere Pro for my videos from camera.
I 've been using this software well before for certain purposes when I was working with Flash,
but I'm very new in HD video post-prod.

I would be interested in knowing good open source alternative sofwares, both for video and sound edition,
that work both in Mac and PC and that are reliable for HD.

Thank you very much.

Fred.

I think it will be difficult to have an open source video editing software currently available that is at par with Adobe Premiere Pro. For sound editing, may be you can try the freely available "Audacity", which I think runs on both Mac and PCs. IMHO, Adobe Premiere Pro is beginning to get better than Apple's Final Cut Pro for video editing. Premiere Pro is very tightly linked with Adobe After Effects, and the dynamic linking between the two is amazing, better, in my opinion, than Final Cut Pro's with Motion and/or Shake. After Effects API is very clean and easy to use than Apple's Quicktime for programming Final Cut Pro. I think Premiere Pro's API is a little messy, but still better than Apple's. I think the messy product in Adobe's arena is Photshop, which needs to update at many different levels.

I suggest you ask your question at HV30 Forum. You'll find people who know most of the Mac and PC software options available. The section for Mac Software is here. And the section for PC software is here.

There's VirtualDub but it only works under the Windoze platform.

Things have changed since this thread started. Lightworks, a professional NLE is going Open Source.

Usually running on Windows, the plan is to port it to Linux and OSX.

I too use Open Source for all requirements.

Avidemux is quite a capable video editing software IMO.

Check out the Lightworks forum for help. It's very buggy at the moment but I think they'll get it working properly as time goes by. Lots of new users complain about Lightworks but it really is very powerful and simple, but you do have to learn how to use it.
