Best resolution / DPI for HP Z3200PS

I have read about the best resolution to send to an Epson Inkjet has always been either 180, 240, or 360 DPI for the best results.
Is it the same for the HP Z3200 inkjet printer?

If you go to the paper size page in the dtriver you see custom settings at the bottom right. There's also a PPI number shown. either 300 or 600 PPI. Changing the custom settings in the pop up menu will change that information between 300 and 600 PPI. That is what the driver likes to get as information for the printer quality settings you made. It will also appear above the Qimage preview window if that is the program you print from.  The driver itself will extraapolate the data it gets to the resolution it expects if the application you print from didn't do it on the fly (Qimage does) or you didn't prepare the file yourself.

generally, the 3200 is at its best if one uses 300. On larger prints, using a strong image file, I have used 150 successfully.

Ernst I never print through the hp driver I save out 16 bit tiffs and use hp's web app to download the file direct to the printer as far as I know this is the only way to print in 16 bit files
so in a perfect world 300ppi is the best is there somewhere in between 150 and 300
that also works?

That's interesting - why does lightroom have a check box for 16 bit output with the z3200 selected?  Do you mean its not really printing at 16bit that way?

Qimage is 8 bit so I don't have to worry whether the rest of the print workflow is 16 bit, I can throw 16 bit at it and it will do the job. It has many image quality aspects that I value higher than an entire 16 bit print route. Whether the other routes lead to an all 16 bit processing line is debatable:

Probably not,
the problem I was having was printing from PS CS4 using the HP driver I couldn't get the paper size figured out so It always wasted a lot of paper. If I had a lets say 12x18 document I want to print it landscape to save paper but it would always print it portrait. Thats why I used the web ap instead. Much easier to figure out the paper handling stuff for me. Maybe things have changed with the new driver.
I am just interested in what res to send to the printer as i mentioned in my OP.
On the Epson it was always 180 minimum, 240 regular and 360 for best quality.

I believe those numbers are specific to Epson. I agree with the poster above: as I understand it, 300ppi is the standard resolution for printing on the Z3200. I have got good results on larger prints using 180ppi, but I probably wouldn't go below that, and I'd prefer to remain above it if possible.

The best is 300 or 600 PPI if you squeeze the virtual size of your originals that the resolution becomes 300 or 600 PPI without resampling. 600 PPI for the papers that can handle the 600 PPI related dot resolutions in printing. The print sizes then depending on the resoltion<>size ratio of the original take-scan etc.

In practice you buy an application with the best resampling routines possible that feed the driver the requested native resolutions 300 or 600 PPI on the fly at the print sizes you need at that time. No need to worry about what comes next in ranking of best resolutions to feed the printer with.
