Dell U2711 vs. NEC 2690WUXi2 for print work
« on: February 20, 2010, 12:43:32 pm »

Hello everyone,

Now that I'm starting to produce and sell prints more seriously, I'm starting to upgrade my gear, and I'm looking to upgrade my 3.5-year old S-PVA monitor (a Gateway FPD2485W).  Since that particular computer is used almost exclusively for photographic work, most of which is destined for print, I'm looking for a wide gamut monitor.

The recommendation I've gotten the most often from photographers that print a lot is the NEC LCD2690WUXI2, which I can purchase online for 1150$CAN.  I was probably going to buy one of these, until I saw the Dell U2711.

The U2711 has significantly higher resolution, and early reviews seem to indicate that the colour gamut and accuracy pretty much matches the NEC.  I cannot find any info on the luminosity and colour consistency across the screen however.  The NEC seems to be excellent in this regard.  Finally, I can get the Dell U2711 for 999$ locally at a retailer that sells Dell monitors, which is a bit of savings over the NEC (not to mention higher resolution)

What worries me a bit is that despite really good reviews, pros seem to shun Dell IPS monitors such as the U2410, and the same will most likely happen with the U2711.  Is there any particular reason for this, or is it more a case of shunning Dell as a brand because 80% of their monitors are TN panels?

Also, if I have overlooked other 24"-27" wide-gamut monitors in this price range, please feel free to suggest.

Cheers,

Luc

People shun the U2410 because it's possibly the least consistent monitor of modern times, and people are rightly unhappy with the level of quality control exhibited. The U2711 is brand new and untested, with the U2410 doing it absolutely no favours. The NEC is a tried and tested, high quality, very good monitor. Either wait to see how the U2711 fares or go with the NEC if you don't/can't wait.

Also, consider purchasing the NEC SpectraView II calibration software (and puck) with the 2690. I'm very happy with mine and I'm adding the 2490 for better sRGB editing.

I happen to like my U2410.  Good value and good performance....but, you really do need to manually calibrate the display.  Out of the box, it looks like cr@p.  Well calibrated it has very good color reproduction and good shadow and highlight rendition.
