I'm looking for a material that is bendable but rigid.  Like the legs of a gorilla pod or a desk lamp.  I want to attach one end to a variety of surfaces (probably just attach it to a clamp), clip something to the other end, bend it into position and have it stay there. It doesn't have to hold much weight and I would prefer it to be light.  I might be able to get away with heavy gauge solid core wire.  Thoughts?

Flex arms for underwater strobes might be just the ticket ... something like this, maybe ...

For light loads, I have used medical splints. It's light, bendable and can be shaped very easily...

We use these at work all the time.

Expensive: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4KY11 or http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/2ZUL7

Mid price: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/3P816?Pid=search  They make different ends and sizes.

Cheap: like you said you could crimp an alligator clip to the end of a 10AWG copper wire and call it good

You can get thick aluminum wire at craft and hardware stores that bends easily but will hold its shape.  Then you could get the alligator or other clips and attach.   Copper wire might work too but is harder to bend into tight radiuses.

Why not a desk lamp ? Take the 'head' off and attach a crocodile clamp instead.
It's surely cheap.

Yeah, but it kind of bugs me to buy something and throw half of it in the trash.  Most that I've seen have been a bit on the short side.  I've one about a foot from me and I keep thinking of sacrificing it....
