This device is a real disappointment, just a glorified iPod Touch. It is not powerful enough for photo editing, doesn't have a real operating system or onboard camera. It looks like it was marketed to compete with the ebook readers like Kindle.

This is not the Apple Tablet PC that many were hoping for.

That echos eerily like one of the most embarrassing minireviews of the iPod: "No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame."

The whole point if iPod (and presumably iPad) is that it doesn't do much, but what it does it does really, really, really well. Geeks think they know better when they demand wifi and 3G and bluetooth and multitouch and the kitchen sink - but geeks are a tiny minority of consumers, and the vast majority just wanted an MP3 player which is easy to use and does what it claims.

It does some things well, looks like. I too was hoping for a more robust platform. On the other hand, for my kind of work, which often includes travel and presentations, it could work pretty well. Be tempted to leave laptop at home.

It's an iPod for the elderly! Larger screen, bigger keys to type on make it an appliance more suitable for the retirement home.

I think even Steve Jobs's reality distortion field couldn't turn that marketing pitch into a best seller

I was really bored during the presentation until I started to put various functionalities together. The combination of email, eReader, photo browser, internet, film player and game platform make it completely irresistible on the road. As said above it does all of these better than ANY of the existing offerings, save for a full size computer.

Michael's article didn't quite work for me (any half-pro photographer trying to convince a client wouldn't mind taking a laptop with him; same with card-readers/backup storage) up to the point where her starts discussing embedded clips and the challenge for those creating content. Michael has been beating the convergence drum for years but here is - at last - an affordable platform that could dramatically accelerate the trend. It may also also solve the problem of MMrs Murdoch and friends dying to make money from their online content.

So I'll leave you with the following equation: iPad = Kindle + Harry Potter magical books + Blackberry/Smartphone(*). Not a bad combo eh?

(*): Yes, I know, it's not a phone, but it does the 'smart' bit really well

With no dedicated video processor, it's debatable on how well this device will handle video. It has no Wacom digitizer, no stylus support or handwriting recognition.

I'll stick with my Macbook Pro and my iPhone.

90-99% of the consumers who will be purchasing this product will NOT be professional photographers.

from a marketing standpoint, this might be the shot in the arm that apple needs to boost their quarterly profit margin, again....

but in all reality, we're still 1-2 years away from having a MBP in a form factor like the Ipad.

I was really hoping for an OLED screen, less power consumption I believe, with truer colors IIRC.

but not having an integrated webcam (I think) will limit what people can do with it. Video chatting would have been a VERY GOOD selling point IMO for this product, that gorgeous large screen screams "VIDEO CHAT"!

but I guess I'm just rambling again, someone punch me back into reality

i think 99.999% of all people buying this will not be photographers.....

it does not matter how long...the computing requirements will go up so much that mbps will still be the size they are today.....
my iphone is WAY faster, can shoot and edit video (and so many other things) and fits in my pocket....my first mac ( a 660AV also capable of editing video..somehow...) had a 250mb HARDDRIVE.....

the oled screen would have put this at a much higher price point.....it will come....next generation or the one after....

the missing ichat thing is hard to take.....definitely ATT being difficult....."ok you can have unlimited data for 30$ but no ichat!"...this too will pass.....same for iphone.....

Here's what I find interesting.

The iPad doesn’t have an SD card slot, nor a USB port . To download photos and video from a USB-connected camera -- OR a USB card reader -- OR directly from an SD card you need the OPTIONAL iPad Camera Connection Kit.  http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2010/...apple_ipad.html

CORRECTION, ADDED LATER. Rob Galbraith wrote to me to say: Actually, the camera-as-reader and actual card reader protocols are entirely different, so without specific card reader support in the iPad it won't work. This support may well be there, but it will need to be deliberate as opposed to a byproduct of the camera support. Here's hoping it is!

AND Here's what a friend added (although this may not relate to serious photo enthusists): The iPad does come with a USB to 30-pin  connector, which would mean you can connect it to a Mac or iPhone/iTouch and  sync it directly with those devices to grab photos, music, apps, etc. And I’m  guessing anyone who buys one of these will also own either a Mac or an iPhone  (or both!) and will be using it as a secondary device, not a primary. In other  words, they will have uploaded any photos to the Mac first regardless. But I  do agree with you that it should have an SD slot and USB port  anyway.

Peter,

Firstly, no need to shout at "size=4".

Secondly, repeat this mantra: "The iPad is a big iPod Touch with a far bigger, better screen and far better touch-screen keyboard; it is not a laptop."

Thirdly, I am not sure why some people are so bothered about the iPod/iPhone/iPad approach of having a single multi-purpose socket on the device, and then providing USB, SD card reading, VGA out, composite video out, keyboard connection and so on through that socket. But I am sure there will soon be slates with a half-dozen sockets along the side, which is more the Windows laptop approach.

Fourthly, my guess/hope is that in time, more and more of this connectivity will be provided wirelessly, through Wi-Fi and blue-tooth.

[quote name='BJL' post='343074' date='Jan 28 2010, 04:19 PM']Peter,

Firstly, no need to shout at "size=4".

had forgotten that Size 4 is huge. More importantly, Rob Galbraith wrote to me to say: Actually, the camera-as-reader and actual card reader protocols are entirely different, so without specific card reader support in the iPad it won't work. This support may well be there, but it will need to be deliberate as opposed to a byproduct of the camera support. Here's hoping it is!

I don't see why anyone would want to use it as a card-reader anyway, when it only has at most 64GB of storage. Probably has slow USB speeds, as well...

Would make an ideal on the road backup device especially if you are taking it on holiday. This is not a pro machine: it is a leisure device and a trendy gadget to replace the (pretty much rarefied) MacBook Air market.

I've been thinking about the iPad as an electronic portfolio-and the wow factor of handing over that gadget to an art director is kind of appealing, after all.

For anybody shooting RAW with  a late-mode camera, these devices just don't have enough storage to be practical as a backup device. Paying the extra fee for the top-capacity 64GB model to do backups doesn't make a lot of sense when there are dedicated storage devices that provide far more storage for your money.

Honestly I think the amount of flash-memory in these pads is a joke, especially considering the price-premium of the higher-capacity models (I guess that's typical Apple though). My wife's MP3 player has 32gb of flash memory and costs a fraction what these pads are going to sell for.

Yes but Apple's memory is washed in Unicorn tears
