Rear feed 3800
« on: January 21, 2010, 02:07:56 am »

I'm trying to load some 17x22 (Exhibition Fiber which means using the rear feeder.  This is the first time I've used this feeder and I can't get it to take the paper.  I've made sure it's straight and applied mild pressure for several seconds like the instructions say but it just doesn't respond.  I expect there's something I need to do but I'm not sure that that is.

Thanks.

You might check Eric Chan's excellent

http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Ep...html#howsmaller

and search on 'rear feed'.  Way down on the page might be a solution for you?

Can you hear the feed mechanism cycling as it tries to grab the paper, either during or after your attempts?

It's possible you're feeding the paper too quickly after hitting the print button. Larger prints take a bit longer to process. The printer's message window will let you know when it's time to feed the paper.

Just a thought.

I'm not getting any reaction at all from the printer when I try to load from the rear feeder.   I've turned off the command to check paper size but I'm wondering if there is anywhere to chose which feed to use in the software or driver or?

Thanks.

I don't have a 3800 here at work (and at home I print through a RIP) but if I remember correctly you should be able to choose the paper feed source from the page setup dialog box.

Regardless of the source, though, the printer should have either made some noises as it tried to feed the paper or showed a message asking to load paper.

Are you telling it that you want to use the rear feed?  In the print dialog box somewhere (I'm not at home to check right now), there is a box to choose which feed source to use.  You need to change "Sheet" to "Manual - Rear" (if I'm remembering it correctly).  You need to do that before you stuff the paper in, if you aren't doing that already.

I find that when I put the paper in the rear feed, it slides down a ways without much resistance, then there's a moderate amount of resistance as it continues in among the rollers, before it finally stops.  Are you pushing it far enough to hit the "moderate amount of resistance" region?

Hi D. King
If you mean "Manual - Rear" you'll have to push/press the paper slightly downwards until the feeding mechanism picks it up.
I do that by inserting the paper into the rear feed an let it "loose" first. Then I press the loose paper down on the far end edge with my fingertips without touching the paper surface. That's already enough. You'll hear the printer working for about a second. The paper will be picked up  and held firmly by the printer now. I recommend doing this procedure before sending the print job.
