D3 Mask Transluscent or Opaque
« on: January 19, 2010, 10:51:17 am »

Does anyone know if the aspect ratio mask in the viewfinder for the D3x or D3s is opaque or transluscent?
Thanks.

This review of the D3 viewfinder says:

"When the D3 is shooting in a format other than full-frame FX mode, a translucent LCD in the viewfinder partially masks the inactive portions of the frame."

And their D3x review says "The Nikon D3X's inherits the Nikon D3's pentaprism viewfinder" and links to the viewfinder review above.

Their overview of the D3s says:

"When shooting in modes other than the native FX-format 3:2 aspect ratio, a translucent LCD in the viewfinder of Nikon's D3S partially masks the inactive portions of the frame."

Thank you.  I'd read reviews but it still wasn't clear to me that they were describing the actual mask as transluscent.  I'd also seen one blog entry where it was described as opaque so I wanted to check in with LL subscribers.  Thanks so much for the information.
