Not sound effects, it sounds like a straight recording from a frozen lake to me, should be familiar to anyone who's been ice fishing or swimmning. Being from Finland I can imagine it sounding alien to those from, say, New Mexico

Wow, run for your life!

The only ice we know, here in southern Arizona, is that over which we pour bourbon! But, come to think of it, it occasionally makes cracking sounds as it accomplishes its mission in life.

It sounds coooooool on the Maggies, similar to the sounds of phaser fire from the Star Trek TV series

It's good to know at least somebody is taking my post seriously!

The only ice we have here in NM is on my completely shaded, northern facing, steep driveway!  Not suitable for fishing or (gasp!) swimming.

Taos?

We have *lots* of ice around here. Winter time there are some pretty interesting sounds coming off the rivers. Typically it’s the sound of river rock being pushed around but when we have a deep freeze there are some pretty percussive cracking noises. When hiking in early spring, especially by the alpine lakes, there are occasionally realllly low frequency but powerful sounds coming from the lakes. And the best performer in my ‘hood is the Emmons glacier.

Crap, now you have me wanting to schlep audio recording stuff along with the other baggage.
