Certainly having a good calibrated monitor helps. I print on a Z3100. I had been using a 6 year old dell 2405 monitor. I always spent of lot of time doing print tests to get something approaching original works I was copying. This mainly due to the old monitor not being accurate - even after calibrating with an i1 display2.
This week I purchased a Dell U3011 monitor. All of a sudden my printed images on canvas and matt papers were way more accurate straight from what I was seeing on screen. It cost a lot of money but well worth the investment. Of course a high end NEC or Eiso would be even better, but that's a whole new league.
