([a href=\'index.php?act=findpost&pid=40565\']Adrian T's excellent image of Mayon volcano[/a]) from yesterday got me thinking about some of my older work shot in Hawai`i a few years ago. Here's an image of a pahoehoe flow shot one late afternoon on the coastal plain of Kilauea Volcano below the Pu`u O`o vent in 2004. As was typically the problem, the heat from the lava made it somewhat difficult to get tack-sharp focus...

To anyone else with volcano images, post them in this thread! I might add a few more or mine later on if people would like to see them.

Nice one!  Shot with a 400mm lens, I trust?

Wow, that is an AWESOME image. Can't imagine being that close to molten lava. You have amazing images on your site Grant, you should try to make a trip to the Philippines once Mt. Mayon raises its seismic activity again.

Here's another shot of Mt. Mayon. Shot at 7pm, 2 minute exposure, 300mm.

The Volcano Runneth Over

Great shot! How easy is it to get access for photos like that?

Yes, please post some more.

It's a very pleasing image. I find the shape of the molten lava very "elegant".
Congrats.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

In terms of access, I used to work at the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, and a few of these pictures were taken on research and work trips in places accessible only by helicopter and generally off-limits to the public. Some, however, were taken at various open places around Volcanoes National Park, a short hike from the end of the Chain of Craters Road / Puna side depending on the flows. At certain times in the past decades, the lava flows have been very easily accessible.

Climbing a (6075m) volcano while another one was erupting in the background, Peru:

The picture "Close-up of the same" in the last set is very great, I also like the first shot (first set) ´n "The collapsed roof of a lava tube" but all of your photos are well done !
