Printing Hubble photographs to resell?
« on: December 31, 2009, 08:05:29 am »

I have been downloading some of the Hubble files of outer space to print on my Epson 9900. The images are just stunning. I just uprezzed a 25mb tiff through Genuine Fractals 6,printed at 40 X 40 it was 645mb.
As a printmaker it does't get any better then this. The website says most if not all of the posted images are not copyrighted other then proper credit must be given to NASA and John Hopkins University. Does that mean downloading for your own enjoyment or would you be able to print and sell. I have the phone number and will be checking with these folks next week. Thought someone here may have run into this in the past.

Thanks. Some really special images. What I have printed to date is super hi rez. Some of the tiff images they have exceed 25mb which makes for some great large prints. I reduced one of the  tiff's to a 2mb JPEG and LL would not let me download it,wonder why?

These Hubble images are ours to work with (we paid for the instrument, after all).

My first is at http://www.paulroark.com/Hubble-Monocerotis-Dunes.html

A 16x20 print of this will be in Gallery Los Olivos (California) Jan-Feb Featured show.

Not a comment regarding reselling...

Just adding my 2 cents that I enjoy looking at images of space, so far I have just been using HubbleSite, but have found some great stuff there including a 35 mb jpg of the Eagle Nebula and a 200 mb jpg of the Carina Nebula.

I WISH I had a nice printer. So, with the copyright information they have, it would be ok to send one of these images to an online print-lab as well?
[almost a redundant question, but I just had to ask]

Thanks.

AFAICT yes. The print lab might refuse to print them thinking they are not your work, though. In that case just show them the Creative Commons license which should solve things.

I've printed some of these myself in the past, and they are absolutely stunning!

Me too.  It is a horrible thing to do to your black ink cartridge.

Ditto on the black ink cartridges . Especially when you have 4 blacks at $230.00 apiece!
Paul,
Love that black and white image.

On another note I also tried downloading the 425mb tiff (Carina Nebula Pano) and Safari could not handle it,crashed twice. Mac Pro 10.5 with 10mb ram. Downloaded for 45 minutes before shutting down, any suggestions?

In addition, many many stunning files of extraordinary quality can be found here of the surface of Mars-

http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/katalogos.php?page=1

Some of these are of a quality difficult to get traditionally, and are wonderful to print. You will need the jpeg2000 plugin, and some free time on your hands. There are many to pick through not worth the time, but the occasional amazing finds are extraordinary. I've used some of these to make B&W digital prints of the highest quality to show at workshops, as the resulution, contiuous tone, and overall quality are often beyond the printing technology. Some very beautiful color as well, I have a 35x46 Photo Rag of a color image on the shop wall, and it stops pedestrians on the street.
If you have no life after discovering this site, I am not liable...

I resell these images sucessfully for a couple of years.  Not that I am thrilled someone else might do it!

You have to be careful.  Not all hubble images belong to NASA.  There are several artists who make enhancements of NASA's images and those enhanced images belong to them.  Additionally several other individual photographers rent various telescopes and take their own images.  You can NOT sell those images without their permission and they are deeply mixed with NASA's stuff on just about all the sites mentioned in this thread.  So I urge caution and will even warn you that one of the guys is quite the jerk and will sue you without warning if he catches you selling his stuff.  He says "NASA dident pay for that telescope time - I did".   Can't really blame him.

No Lap Required - I already have them all.    Just send me a PM of which image you want and how big you want it and I'll hook you up with a nice price ;-)

Just finished my first gallery wrap of a Hubble shot. 40 X 50" with 2" stretcher frame. Not sure if I can find someone to buy this stuff but it sure looks nice hanging in the gallery.

I believe there are a couple of sites that specialize in printing this type of stuff.  Not sure how much of a market there is, but certainly seems to be some demand.  Certainly would seem to have some commercial appeal.

Dan,

Very nice print, looks like it would be a nice impact print in a office lobby or a large home!

People go NUTS for these things when they see them printed ... I've printed some hubble stuff and some Apollo moon stuff and given them as gifts and the universal reception has been very, very positive.
