Sinar Hy6 and 45° and 90° Prism
« on: December 23, 2009, 12:40:35 pm »

Hello @all Hy6 users here;

I have one Sinar Hy6 camera with the 45° prism with Leaf label (it is the same as Sinar), using it with the Sinarback 75LV rotating - revolving adapter. I was very disappointed at the fact, that I cannot rotate the Sinarback when the prism is mounted to the camera. I´m also not such a big fan of the 45° prism and would like to have 90° prism, and here is my question;

is there somebody here working with Sinar Hy6 + 90° prism + Sinarback r75LV and can tell me, if it is possible to rotate the Sinarback with the prism or not. If not, I would prefer to change to the 90° prism anyway, so I can rotate the camera instead rotating the back.

How many photographers here are working with the Sinar Hy6 anyway?

Merry Xmas!

I think I saw I post a while back about a Sinar 45 degree finder which was designed to allow the back to rotate. It was different to the Leaf finder. Perhaps someone can confirm this either way. Otherwise you could try searching the archives.

Yes, Graham,

the 45° prism was modified by Sinar to allow for the back revolving movement. The Leaf 45° prism deosn't.
Reason why is that this 45° prism comes from the older Rolleiflex 600X series. So if you have a Sinar one you will be able to revolve the back.

The newest, especially for the Hy6/AFi developped 90° finder (not prism, but mirror) does allow the back to rotate.

Best regards,
Thierry

edited for PS: don't ask me if the 90° finder is available (or still), since when I left Sinar it still wasn't.

Just to confirm Theirry (not that he needs it, his info is always good) I have a Hy6 and a 45 degree Sinar prism. The back rotates with no problems.

Best,

Mitchell

I would check again before you sell. The early 45° prism viewfinders, regardless of their logo (Leaf, Sinar, Rolleiflex) had a straight base. Franke & Heidecke, the manufacturer of all of them, has changed the design in order to allow for rotation of the Sinar rotating back. You can easily see if your viewfinder is of the latest type as it should be curved at its base, just about under where the eyepiece is. If it is the old version, Franke & Heidecke, or rather its successor DHW Fototechnik, can do the converting.

And, also some Leaf 45° prism viewfinders do seem to have that curved base as you can see from some Leaf AFi images on my web pages. Personally, I have the Rolleiflex variant of the viewfinder and it has the curved base.

I have the Sinar Hy6 with 45 finder, my back can rotate with no problems.

Does anyone know if the 90 finder is available? I checked with my agent and was told that the 90 finder made so far was of poor quality and was rejected by Sinar. Thus none was available now. Not sure if it were true. Anyone knows about this? Or anyone owned a 90 finder and can share his/her views? Thanks.

I doubt it ever was available, and that's right, the 90 mirror finder was rejected for extrem poor overal built- and optical quality, that was about 1/2 year ago.

Bestc regards,
Thierry

I´m waiting on this information directly from Sinar and hope to get some after xmas holidays....

It is good to know. that I can switch to another prism or perhaps modify my Leaf prism, to allow back rotation.

I very much like this forum!!!!!!

I would go straight to the horse's mouth, so to say, and contact the manufacturer in Braunschweig. The best person to contact would be Rainer Schönrock, email r.schoenrock at franke-heidecke.net

Hope this helps. Enjoy the Season,

The Leaf AFi 90 mirror finder may have the same POOR quality.   Anyway, its distortion is very high.

"Leaf", "Sinar", or "Rolleiflex": it does not matter what the inscription is as they are all identical and manufactured by Franke & Heidecke in Braunschweig.

Thanks for the confirmation. I so want a 90 prism for my Hy6. There's really no Santa Claus after all.

Have a great 2010, everyone!

I would suggest you contact DHW Fototechnik directly on the matter, see the contact I provided earlier in this thread.

On another note, DHW is currently considering to start production of the 6060 film back for the Hy6 / AFi depending on tooling costs. The design and prototypes are ready. That would top my wishing list for 2010 !

Do they still produce Rolleiflex Hy6?

No need to for the moment as there is still stock available. But the Hy6 is still supported, yes.
