Z3100 and 10" roll Paper
« on: December 22, 2009, 09:08:39 pm »

I've been trying to find this in the specs, but I cannot get 10" roll paper to feed in my Z3100, I thought for sure it would work.
It keeps giving me an error saying the paper width is not wide enough.
Anybody know if it can be tricked?

The manual says that 18" is the minimum, but I know that I've been successful loading 17" rolls in the past, just as I've loaded 8" paper instead of the 8.3" it says is the minimum sheet width.  I'm sure to push it as far as 10" though, you will need to perform a little trickery.  I've never tried scabbing onto a roll, but have taped small samples of sheet material together to get past the length requirements when I have been trying to proof something on slightly undersized scraps.  I don't think that the width is measured past the first inch or two if the roll is properly aligned, or six inches or so if it advances the paper for a second try at alignment.  Once you get the paper loaded, it doesn't ever check for width again, so you can leave your 10" roll loaded with no issues.  Just tape a scrap of the same thickness paper with some tape on the back side as a temporary fudge.  Unless it is extraordinarily thick media you shouldn't have any issues.

12" is the official min width.  I went through the same thing with a 100' foot roll of 10".  Oops.

Yes, around 30 cm wide, slightly less than 12" is possible.

If you put a white sticker on the felt bed below the head travel you could fool the sensor.
I've done that at the right side with sheets for another reason, in your case it should be on the left of the roll.

It could be that the sensor at the head carriage measures the front edge of the roll paper on that spot too and then it will be difficult to get both the left and right reading equal.

Another trick could be the addition of 2 inches of paper at the left side of the roll more than a foot deep. I do not think the printer measures the width in between jobs but I could be wrong about that.

If you have two small rolls then improvise an adapter + a thin disc on the paper spindle to load them both and add a white sticker on the felt bed where they touch one another. Qimage can take care of nesting the images on both. Keeps the speed in the printer as well.

Be aware that a roll that small may take another course than straight.
