I'm not sure where to ask this.  I can not add an avatar from my files.  Doesn't even give me an avatar choice from my files.  It only has from your selection of pictures or from the internet.  Can't I choose one and upload it from my files?

The only way you can use one of your own files as an avatar is to place it on a publicly-accessible website. On my website, for example, I have a folder which contains only the file which I use as my avatar, sized appropriately. None of the links on my website refer to it directly, so most people won't know that it's there. The only link to it is the one I posted here for my avatar.

I hope this helps.

Sorry - forget the message below. I was confusing a personal photo with an avatar. Problem solved with an astonishingly accurate self-portrait, as you can see.

I've finally tried to set up a photo for myself but can't get it to work. I click the "Choose" button in my profile settings and select a file from either my local disk or my iDisk. When I then click "Save settings", I get a message saying the upload failed. It then suggests I contact a system administrator but I thought I'd try general wisdom first.

Help!

Jeremy,

I'm glad you chose one with you smiling. Frowning wouldn't have looked quite so friendly.

Alas, no. I know an excellent retouch artist, though. He's done wonders with my teeth.

Go to "My Controls" (link at top of this page), then click on "Edit avatar settings" about half-way down the left hand side of the page.

You have to provide a link to a photo kept somewhere else. Maximum 150x150 pixels, 100k.
