Z310 Printheads - Max. Recovery Level ?
« on: December 21, 2009, 06:09:11 am »

It seems that my printheads are finally at their "end of life". I'm getting the following error message after the printing and scanning steps at the end of the printhead alignment: "Calibration cancelled due to scanning problems."

The scan axis calibration and the line sensor calibration is ok, but in the Service Support Panel beside the printheads is the status "Max Recovery Level 4" with "Error Code 524288". Anybody knows what these codes mean?

Edit: It's a HP Z3100 printer.

Thanks kers, I have the service manual.

Error Code 524288 stands for the expired printhead. But there is nothing about the "Max Recovery Level" in the service manual.

The manuals are available on the Z3100 Wiki pages but I think Thomas is aware of that.

The error code isn't mentioned for its full length but 52 should refer to the drop detector.
If you read comments about the drop detector you may find the cause.
I think a power down and up is one of the first things to do.
When heads fail I do not think it gives an error like that but I have no heads failing so far.
Be aware of the climate conditions right now in Northern Europe.
Colder, dryer, more electrostatic phenomena.

OK i had only one head failure so far - and it caused a leakage from blue into green... so that was obvious...

But i do NOT print large quantities and so far ( three year user in jan 2010)- the Z3100 is working as it should.

I agree with the earlier post - first thing to do is power off from the switch near the power cord. Unplug the machine, let it sit quietly for an hour or so. Restart it.

If you still get the error message, see if you can get the printer to run a print head cleaning, and then a print head alignment. I've only had to do this once in the years I've had the Z-series printers.

Best regards,

In the Z3100 maintenance manual I have:

System Error: 52:YZ

Problem
Description:

The printer has detected a faulty pare in Drop Detector (DDP).

Corrective Action: Try the following:
-Switch the Power OFF from the back of the Printer and disconnect the Power cord. Reconnect the power cord and power On the Printer.
- Check that the Drop Detector cable is not damaged and is correctly connected to the PrintMech PCA.
- Check that the Service Station cable is not damaged and is correctly connected to the PrintMech PCA.
- Replace the Drop Detector ⇒ Page 8-61.
- Reset the Calibration Flag of the Drop Detector ⇒ Page 5-14.
- If the System Error continues, replace the PrintMech PCA ⇒ Page 8-68.
- If the System Error continues, replace the Formatter ⇒ Page 8-147.

Ron, the drop detector calibration is ok, this Error Code 524288 doesn't come up on the printer LCD panel, it's only visible through the event logs on the service support pages of the webserver.

Since the scanning system is ok I think it's time to replace the printheads as stated in the service manual at page 3.16: "If the problem persists after using valid paper, cleaning the printheads, and keeping the window closed, there may be a Failure in the scanning system needing reparation or the printheads, although clean, may not work and need to be replaced."

However, the printheads are all out of warranty, but checking through the front LCD panel of the printer the status of all printheads is still OK. I will get new printheads at the beginning of January.

Thomas,

I've never encountered "Error Code 524288" or the "Calibration cancelled due to scanning problems" error .

Having out of warranty printheads doesn't necessarily present a problem.  I've run for over a year with out of warranty printheads.  I don't replace mine until I see a problem, usually missing colors or a mess of ink where it doesn't belong.

I have seen errors calibrating but they were always solved by shutting the printer down completely and powering back up again.

I have seen another one. Where bond papers etc can not be calibrated as the firmware doesn't allow it I tried to calibrate HP's tracing paper, the calibration went wrong, the ink still fluid in pools on the paper when the scanning started :-]
It prints alright though.

Excellent reminder, Ernst.

That jogged my memory to the time calibration failed with fabric that had a clear backing.
