ColorChecker SG chart without reference data

Hi!

I have bought a ColorChecker SG from B&H. It came without a reference file. B&H referred me to the manufacturer, who writes: "We do not supply reference values for the CororChecker SG. These are not necessary for creating ICC profiles, resp. are included with the corresponding software." Well maybe wit their $$ software. But I want to use Argyll, and Argyll needs reference files.

If xrite don't supply such values together with the chart, they should state this up front, i.e. sell the chart only bundled with the software. As it is now, they charge 265 $ for a worthless product. (Unless you have your own spectrophotometer).

Would anyone here have these values and be willing to send me a copy, or refer me to a source? Mail is hein-dot-be-at-web-dot-de.

In the Profilemaker Pro install there’s a reference for the SG. Doesn’t mean Argyll will be able to read it.

You are right. It's a worthless product without a spectrophotometer. Even Graeme Gill (the author of Argyll CMS) protests against it.
Profiling applications have different ColorCheckers SG reference data in reference files.
For example, for ColorChecker SG the color difference between the ProfileMaker 5.0.8 reference values and the MonacoPROFILE 4.8 reference values reaches 2.8 deltaE [CIE 2000]; and...
between my ColorChecker SG values (measured by an i1Pro) and the ProfileMaker reference values reaches 3.0 deltaE [CIE 2000];
between my ColorChecker SG measured values and the MonacoPROFILER reference values reaches 2.5 deltaE [CIE 2000];
and so on.

In theory perhaps, but real world usage proves this is an excellent profiling target for demanding professionals all over the globe.

Yet they still make better profiles than most other targets with tighter tolerances. Advanced users can make their own reference files and narrow this tolerance even further.

Results speak for themselves. I'd encourage you to do some exhaustive testing and report back. Any conclusions without real world testing are just conjecture.

Hi!

The file should be readable for Argyll. I.e. the author, Graeme Gill, can make it work, but I can not. I keep getting an error message which suspects that the file has the wrong format or is damaged. The file is in Plain Text format as it is supposed to be.

I have involved Graeme Gill in a lengthy email exchange, in the course of which we tried various things to ensure the right file format. I also downloaded a fresh version of Argyll, running it under Tiger rather than Snow Leopard, all to no avail. In Graeme's hands, Argyll created the intended .ti3 file. Graeme sent that to me, but when I tried to throw it at spec2cie, (which is the next step), I got the same error message.

Of course the Unix surface is full of pitfalls for a dummy like me, but I can make dcraw run OK.

Is there anybody here who would have a clue as to what could be tried? Anybody who uses Argyll on a Mac?

Hi!

Andrews file IS readabel for Argyll! All it took was an advice by Brian Griffith, author of Raw Developer, to put "./" in front of the command...
Yes the Unix surface is full of pitfalls for dummies...

Regrettable addendum:

I can not make profiles using Andrews file nor one I got from Graeme Gill, author of Argyll. I can create the .ti3 and .cie files through logo2cgats and spec2cie, but when I use the resulting .cie in scanin, the profile created in colprof has 3-digit dE values. I can make profiles using a ready-made .cie file I got from Brian Griffith. Furthermore, profiles based on the 24 patch ColorChecker have lower dE values than those based on the SG target.

Thought this might be of interest to other potential buyers of the ColorCheckerSG target.
