what's the best choice for a portrait lens ?manual focus 120f/4macro or auto focus 140f/2.8; the difference in price between the two on ebay is quite large up to two thousand in favor of the 140

You can use either lens, both are great but I favor the 120mm for most of my work.
As far as pricing goes, ebay is all over the place, market value for a mint 120mm is about $1600-$1700 and less if its not mint, the 140mm is usually under a $1000 these days. Check out Keh.com, you'll get a better idea of prices there.
