Z3100 Paper orientation on OS X Snow Leopard
« on: December 10, 2009, 03:14:54 pm »

Hi,

I have just installed a Mac Pro with Snow Leopard. The installation of the Z3100 went fine with the default raster printer driver provided with Snow Leopard.

However, I have found a problem that drives me crazy:

I mainly print on 24 inches rolls (As I have a 24 inches Z3100). I often print on Super C/A2 sizes. On my previous computer (PC on Windows XP), if I selected a landscape page, the page was printer on the full witdh of the roll.

On OS X, the printer driver does not take into account the page orientation. If I select portrait or landscape (In the page setup dialog of lightroom for example), it will always print the page verticaly. I cannot have the page rotated by 90° in the printer driver. The only solution I have to achieve that is to redefine all paper sizes in custom sizes and define a width larger than an height.

Have I missed something (It is late here in France...) or does someone has a solution to fix my problem ?

Thanks a lot in advance !

Perhaps I was not clear in my message. I am a new user of OS X printing system. Perhaps it is an obvious setting.

When I print with a page setup in portrait:

I have this finishing in the Z3100 driver (which is a normal behaviour):

The problem is when I print with a page setup in landscape:

I have this finishing in the Z3100 driver:

This is all wrong, I would expect this (As I had on Windows XP):

How could I achieve this ?

Thanks a lot!

I let your question pass so far as I have no Mac here.

But .... check what the printer actually measures on the roll width. In metrics or inches.
I have more than once used a print page size that should fit the roll width and when things went wrong it often was a slightly smaller roll or the printer measuring it as a smaller roll. mm´s or fractions of mm´s The printer driver will then automatically rotate the print page on the roll. No other choice then as making a slightly smaller print page.

Ernst,

Thanks for your idea. Unfortunately, I have the same result with smaller papers. Even If I use a A4 landscape page setup to print on a 24" roll, I have the same bahaviour.

The only workaround I found was to create a custom paper with the width bigger than the height and to print in portrait.

Cheers

PS: I use paper presets defined by the driver, so they should have the right size.

I had a 44" print page width that fitted HM Photorag 44" perfectly till the next batch of rolls that were slightly smaller (possibly drier).

The presets will do their job as long as the roll width (and roll width measurement) behaves accordingly.

BTW, the PS3 driver behaves different and more stubborn on this issue than the PCL3 driver. At least on a Windows machine.

With the PCL3 driver I select a shorter length than width, I give the OK, the driver warns, I continue and set landscape in the driver main menu.
It will print the print page in landscape mode as long as the length of the print page doesn't exceed the roll width. The print page will have approx. 5mm print margins in the application to print from so at least 10 mm less than the roll width.

With the PS3 driver the margins are taken out in the driver, a print page specified in the driver has the netto size and no further margin reduction is seen in the application you print from. That way it could fit differently in the roll width. Any chance you print with the PS3 driver to a Z3100-PS machine? Reduce at least 10-11 mm on the length of the print page to get it in the width of the roll.

Also try to make a default or printing shortcut of the settings you want, the drivers sometimes go back to the default when temporary changes are made.

Unfortunately I cannot try with a PS3 driver as I do not own a Z3100-PS.

My problem is not only with rolls.

If I load successfully an A3+ sheet in the Z3100 in landscape mode (and the driver sees in the finish module that it is loaded in landscape), the drivers is never taking into account the landscape page setting. It will always print in portrait and of course the print will not fit the sheet. It is not a problem in the driver display as I have tried to print and it prints accordingly to the finish display.

Is the Autorotate function in the driver Off ?

The default is On.

Last advice, it is always difficult to check all the routines when you are miles away from one another.

The point is that I do not find this option in OS X driver

Does anyone know if it exists and where is it ?
