should I add a "WARNING contains sunrise" label?
« on: November 30, 2009, 03:44:27 pm »

Sunrises can be spectacular but tend to be a bit cliché. So I normally try to have not too many of the sunrise shots in my portfolios.

But one sunrise last Summer was just simply great, so I gave it a portfolio of its own on my site: a glorious sunrise.

Do you agree, or I am just being sentimental?

You had fun didn't you?  When a beautiful sunrise (or sunset) fails to inspire perhaps its time to go. However, generally they need to be your sunrises - else often comes the cliché.
Great images.

Yes, sunrises/sunsets can be quite seductive... it helps though to have something else present, e.g., an interesting foreground, to make it more yours, location-specific, and less a cliché. Your photographs are quite interesting as abstract cloud studies, at least for me.

I think the assemblage has impact as a suite of harmonious studies, which tends to lessen the "you had to be there" syndrome that often dogs individual sunsets/sunrises.

(Mea culpa - I was out this morning snapping the only colourful sunrise we've had for weeks here - but I went for abstraction by moving the camera about to get ghost trees in the foreground.)

Thank you all for your thoughts!
May be the pictures are more about clouds than about the sunrise as such and that is what makes them better than many other pretty sunrises I photographed.

And nothing wrong with enjoying what is just beautiful - even if there is no artsy extra interpretation layer available to add interest

There's nothing wrong with a little cloud porn now and then, it's good for the soul.

There are some really nice studies in your collection and I enjoyed them - but do you think the group would have more impact if there were just five or six differentiated ones?

hi Bill,

That is what I normally would have - hurt myself and put just a few on the website. But hence the question - can a sunrise be so spectacular to warrant a whole portfolio of one occasion.

In this case I would say yes! A bunch of good starting points for paintings, was my first thought.

I think you get away with this nicely as the photos can stand on there own.  In other words there very good.

I can feel the excitement you felt when you took these.  They really are awesome.  I don't think there can be too much of a good thing.  How did you manage to be in the right place at the right time?  Good for you!

I really like your site, a lot!  I like the fact that you write about your work and your method.  Too many photographers put up pictures and then say some cliched thing like "my work speaks for itself."  I like your goals and statistics.  I like hearing about your journeys in the highlands.

But, I think you put too many pictures up to call it a portfolio, not just in your cloud gallery.  You have some great stuff here mixed in with some good stuff and some pretty decent stuff.  I think the great stuff gets lost in the large collection.  If this were a travel log, the volume of photos might be more understandable, but as a photo portfolio, it is too much.

Sunrise/sunset is another great technique we use in photography. I like your clouds and sunrise photos.  There are a couple extraordinary shots in there.  There are a couple shots that are, more or less, duplicates of others.  If you whittle them down a bit, I think they would be a stronger collection. I would also try to group similar shots together.  It can be nice to see the color progression of the sky across three or four similarly framed shots.

So, my opinion is you need some judicious pruning then re-sequencing of the collection. The pure cloud studies (without any ocean or beach) are the best of the bunch, though.

WOW!  I love them!  Beautiful!  (I was out of town when you first posted these, so I didn't see them until now.)

I especially love the cloud close-ups.  Really gorgeous.  It's a lovely set of photos, and having a number of them chronicling the progression of the colors is very nice to see.

*I* think you've avoided making them cliche!

As Stalin used to say, "one sunrise is a statistic. Several are a tragedy...."

The only problem with sunrises is they happen too early in the day.
