Where to go in Manitoba in January?
« on: November 20, 2009, 10:16:36 am »

Hi, I'm flying from the Arabian Gulf to Manitoba in January. First time to Canada. No idea what to expect but a greater appreciation of what cold means. I have a choice of either visiting the Canadian Shield (Kenora), or go to Riding Mountain National Park (Clear Lake). Any suggestions? Hopefully my tripod will be fixed on time. Thanks in advance.

(I also posted this on the Digital Backs forum by mistake - apologies)

Back to the Airport... unless you like the cold!  In January it could hit -30 to -40 celsius.

Just got back - a 60ºC temp swing. Didn't seem too bad at first, a "balmy" -8ºC for a few days, then some cool hoar frost, .... then it got seriously winter (for me, anyway). Managed about 45 minutes outdoors at -30ºC: me, not the camera. Why didn't anybody tell me it was going to be that cold?? ; )
Alas, no aurora borealis - next time maybe.

What, and spoil the surprise? Those of us in the deep-winter part of North America don't think too much about -30C/-20F as we get many days during the winter where our high barely reach that.  Of course, when the summer gets to 35C/95F, which it occasionally does, we die!
