Caprock Filters

I am just wondering how effective the Caprock filters designed to remove moire by placing them in front of the lens are?  Does using them take away sharpness?  Could they be put at the back of the lens?

Yes you can definitely see the moire in the image without the filter where the back of the shirt is exposed.  I think that the filters do a good job, even #8 and see that filter as being the best compromise, along with 5.6 being good too.  #2 puts the image too out of focus.

From your test, I feel that the filters would work for almost everything I would encounter in architecture and interiors, but what about fine linen.  That shirt did not give anywhere near the worse moire I have seen in images, do you know how they work for things like that.

I recently bought a 5.6 and an 8 based on Simon's experiences. I have used them on one job so far and I found that even with the 5.6 I still had the tiniest amount of moire in some places, and the sharpness was not degraded at all. So I have ordered a 4.0 and have yet to use that on a job. The difference between no filter and the 5.6 was quite good - it reduced the moire from noticeable to nearly zero, so they are very useful filters in my opinion, as no raw software has perfect moire reduction filters in my opinion. They either smear the image, reduce saturation, introduce a cross hatch pattern or other problems.
