What about the 1DMkIIN????

It's almost exactly the same as the previous version, a bigger screen and other little bits, why should this make your decision for you?

Man, someone at Canon really needs to rethink their naming convention!  :D

IF you are looking at used 1Ds bodies, I offer the following comments for consideration...

When the 1D2 came out, I still had my 1Ds and I can tell you that from a detail standpoint the 1Ds can out-resolve the 1D2 -- not by much as theyare close, but nonetheless, the 1Ds offers a more finely-detailed file.

IF I were going to consider the 5D, I'd wait and make sure the detail is at least as good as the 1D2 before jumping on it.  From what I saw of the uploaded images, I am not overly impressed, yet to be fair they were jpegs.  More time will tell.  But even at equal imaging capability, I would consider a used 1Ds depending on savings...

...The 5D will most assuredly drive the price of used 1Ds' down further, probably to the $2200~$2600 range.

And let's not forget the 1Ds is a 1-series body, very rugged and well sealed against the elements.  (And yes, large and heavy too.)  This could possibly make an argument for a used 1D2 if you like the speed and don't mind the 1.3 crop factor, since the 1D2 prices seem to falling too...

Lot's of options.

An 8 Mp version appears to have been announced, too, along with the 5D.  Any thoughts on this one?  I'm looking at used 1DS bodies, don't like the XT/20D bodies.  This one, if the price point is right, might do the job.

The only thing the N model adds over the 1D-MkII is the bigger LCD and a slightly easier method for switching cards. Resolution, handling, and image quality are unchanged. If you're looking for a really good sports/action/low-light camera, get a 1D-MkIIN. But if you already have a 1D-MkII, there's really no point in upgrading to the -N unless you need another body anyway.

To me the release of the MI "N" is a bit disconcerting. There is very little change, basically no reason at all to upgrade to. I am not sure why they bothered with it at all, as some of the changes you would have thought could have been done with firmware upgrades.
It makes me think that the successor for the MII must be fairly far off(as digital goes), so maybe the merger of the 1D's is not coming for a while. If it was sooner versus later, I can't imagine why they would release the "N" version.
It will be interesting to see how the sales do on the 5D. To me it only brings two new things to the table. Lightweight as compared to 1Ds and 1DsMII, and secondly, better high ISO noise performance as compared to the original 1Ds. Other than that, why not just pick up a used 1Ds?? (I don't believe the difference in MP is that much, 11 to 12MP)
The price point I think is just too high for a camera that does not have premium AF and weather sealing.
