USB Hub
« on: November 16, 2009, 10:01:41 am »

I've used up all the USB ports on my iMac, except for the keyboard.  Rather than have wires dangling out of there I'd rather get more ports, which I'm told means buying a hub.  I know nothing about these and a little research shows that although not expensive, prices are all over the place. Is there anything to look out for, and any specific brands that are better than others. (Not looking to start a pc vs mac type war here.)

Thanks.

Buy one from a named brand.  Make sure it is USB 2.  Connect it to a USB port on the computer (not kb).  Depending on what accessories you are using, you may want to get a powered one.  Unpowered ports (eg the keyboard) will not connect cameras, memory keys, card readers or portable hard discs.  I use an ancient Belkin 6 port and it's been fine.

I have one I picked up a while back made by iogear.  It works great, has 6 ports -- 4 on the rear, two up front -- but best of all is has a built-in multi card reader too that is almost as fast as my high-speed Lexar dedicated reader.  Makes it easy to read anything and really easy to transfer data between cards. IIRC I paid like $25 or $30 for it.  http://www.iogear.com/product/GUH284R/

Thanks for your advice.

I checked the online Apple Store to see what they sell and see that it is the Belkin USB 2.0 Plus (7 ports). Interestingly when I checked the reviews on Amazon, more than 25% out of 80 reviews had major troubles with the unit. So I guess I'll look for another brand.

I've been using it for years without a hitch.

I wound up buying a CyberPower 7 port powered hub. Have had it for about a week and so far everything is working fine, although at present I'm only using 2 of the 7 ports.
