Focus asist points - what do they do?

On Canon 5D, Ive always had focus assist points enabled although very rarely use AF Servo mode - does enabling assist points have any impact (positive or negative) on One Shot mode, using the central AF point only

Gee, I've always wanted to know that too... I leave them on all the time by leaving the appropriate Custom Function enabled.  But I have no idea if that is a good or a bad thing.  Anyone???
