Epson 3880 Ink Cartridges
« on: November 12, 2009, 11:22:27 am »

I have scoured the internet and not come up with a direct answer to this question.  Previous Epson models required you to swap cartridges and bleed the lines if you wanted to do true black and white prints.  I note that the 3880 adds a new black cartridge but I can't seem to get a direct answer to whether or not the 3880 still requires cartridges to be swapped to do B&W prints.  Thanks in advance.

No swapping of cart’s (they are both inserted in the unit). You of course need to “swap” to go from one black ink to the other via software.

The 3880 (and the 3800 it replaces) has 9 cartridges. This set includes Matte Black and Photo Black so the user can switch between these two blacks depending on PAPER choice, NOT whether you are doing B&W or Color. Your reference to "cartridges to be swapped to do B&W prints" is a bit confusing. The 3800/3880 series of printer has three blacks; Black, Lt. Black and Lt. Lt. Black. The printer has the ability to print beautiful B & W whether you are using Photo Black for gloss surfaces or Matte Black for matte surfaces. I hope this answers your question.

It's all done behind the scenes when you select one of the matte Epson paper stocks in the Epson driver. Takes about a minute for the machine to do its thing. Someone here had some figures for ink waste, I thought it was about 70 cents for the round trip from Photo Black to Matte Black back to Photo Black ink.

"According to Epson, the swap from Photo to Matte Black uses about 1.6ml of ink, while going the other direction uses about 4.6ml."

Not sure where you are getting this info, but it's wrong...you only needed to do Matte Black or Photo Black in swaps when changing papers that required either Matte K or Photo K inks...this had/has zero to do with printing B&W...
